What moves the price is the model and the path to it: a bypass model on an open basement furnace with a water line close by is the simple end, a fan-powered model in a tight closet with a long run for water and a drain is the other.

If the house already has a humidifier that stopped, we look at it first. Often it’s a crusted water panel, a closed saddle valve or a control that lost its wiring, and that’s a repair, not a new unit.

What’s different in Paeonian Springs

In Paeonian Springs it is a handful of houses and mostly propane.

Paeonian Springs is a hamlet, not a subdivision. There are only a couple of hundred homes, all of them detached, and the Census counts too few to give you a clean percentage. The direction is clear enough: propane is the most common heating fuel, with electricity after it, and almost nobody has gas. So the first question on the phone is what the furnace burns, and the second is where it sits.

A propane furnace behaves like gas for this purpose. Its supply air is warm enough that a bypass model can do its job with no fan of its own. A house on a heat pump, on the other hand, wants a fan-powered unit because the air is cooler. Neither choice is complicated, but the wrong one runs poorly all winter and nobody figures out why.

Houses here are a mix of old frame homes and later builds from the 1980s and 1990s, and those years give two different dry-air problems. The older ones lose moisture through the walls. The newer ones keep it, and can end up with damp windows if the humidifier is set to the number on the box rather than the weather. We set it by the temperature outside, and show you where the dial is.

If your house has a humidifier from years ago that no longer works, the $99 visit tells you whether it needs a new pad, the valve opened or the control reconnected. In a small place like this, people also ask us for a second opinion on a quote from somewhere else, and we are glad to give one.

The signs

When a Paeonian Springs house is too dry in winter.

Static that follows you from the car

Wool rugs, dry hands and a spark off the hallway light switch are the first signs. They show up well before the floors start to open.

Static every time you touch a doorknob

A zap off every light switch in January means the air in the house is well under 30 percent. Outdoor winter air holds little water, and heating it dries it further.

Floors and trim open up gaps

Wood gives up water in dry air. Gaps between floorboards, a cabinet door that sticks, or a piano that won’t hold its tuning through winter all point the same way.

Choosing who does it

How to pick who installs a humidifier in Paeonian Springs.

Questions to ask anybody who quotes you one, us included.

  1. Do they ask what the furnace burns?

With so few gas lines out here, a quote that doesn’t start with the fuel type probably came from a template. The model depends on it.

  2. Did they ask where the water and the drain come from?

A humidifier needs a water line and, for most models, a drain. Whoever looks for both before quoting is the one who won’t surprise you on install day.

  3. Did they say which kind, and why?

A bypass model, a fan-powered model and a steam model each suit different systems. Ask why theirs fits your furnace or heat pump, not just what it costs.

Excellent HVAC service for a fair and reasonable price. Moises Rojas fixed my home’s whole house humidifier, which I had no idea wasn’t working for over two years since moving into this house, and now the air in my home is very comfortable.

Questions

Humidifier questions from Paeonian Springs.

Is my house too small for a whole-home humidifier?

Not usually. The unit sizes to the air your furnace moves, so a small house gets a small humidifier. If it only has a wood stove and no ducts, then it isn’t a fit.

Can a whole-home humidifier run on well water?

Yes, if the line is cold water and the pressure is steady. Hard well water crusts the pad faster, so plan on changing it more often.

How much is a whole-home humidifier in Paeonian Springs?

It’s priced at your house, in writing, because the model and the work depend on your system, your ducts and where the water line is. If you have one that stopped working, the diagnostic visit is $99.

What humidity should the house be at in winter?

The EPA says keep indoor humidity between 30 and 50 percent. On the coldest nights we run it nearer the low end so windows don’t sweat, and an Aprilaire with an outdoor sensor turns itself down for you.
