Long January nights on one furnace
A furnace that runs most of a cold night is warming outdoor air that has almost no water in it. By morning the house is dry, and so are the floors.

What moves the price is the model and the path to it: a bypass model on an open basement furnace with a water line close by is the simple end, a fan-powered model in a tight closet with a long run for water and a drain is the other.
If the house already has a humidifier that stopped, we look at it first. Often it’s a crusted water panel, a closed saddle valve or a control that lost its wiring, and that’s a repair, not a new unit.
What’s different in Delaplane
Propane heats more than half the owner homes in ZIP 20144, about 54 percent, with electricity near 30. That’s the reverse of the heat pump towns to the south. A propane furnace sends out hot air all night, and a bypass Aprilaire uses it to evaporate its water. Fewest parts, fewest things to go wrong.
Half the owner homes here went up between 1980 and 1999, and the median is 1986. Houses from those years often came with a humidifier on the furnace that has sat dry for a decade. Look for a box on the duct above the furnace with a thin water line: the pad is probably crusted, the valve closed, or the control unplugged. If it was a good unit in its day, a new pad and a valve turned back on may be all it needs.
The Census counts only about 424 owner homes in the ZIP, so read these shares as direction, not decimals. The lay of the land isn’t in doubt: spread-out detached houses, tanks in the yard, often a private well. The run to the water is frequently the longest part of the job.
About one home in seven predates 1960 and one in four is from 2000 or later. The older ones lose air easily and the newest hold it. A 1900s farmhouse and a 2005 colonial on the same road want different numbers on the dial, and both are in this ZIP. Judge the setting by the coldest weather: a house at 40 percent on a mild day will fog its windows when the temperature drops into the teens. That’s why we like an outdoor sensor on the control, which lowers the target as the weather falls without anyone touching a dial.

The signs
A furnace that runs most of a cold night is warming outdoor air that has almost no water in it. By morning the house is dry, and so are the floors.
A zap off every light switch in January means the air in the house is well under 30 percent. Outdoor winter air holds little water, and heating it dries it further.
Wood gives up water in dry air. Gaps between floorboards, a cabinet door that sticks, or a piano that won’t hold its tuning through winter all point the same way.

Choosing who does it
Questions to ask anybody who quotes you one, us included.
A builder’s unit from the 1990s is often fixable. A good installer checks the pad, the valve and the control before suggesting a replacement.
A humidifier needs a water line and, for most models, a drain. Whoever looks for both before quoting is the one who won’t surprise you on install day.
A bypass model, a fan-powered model and a steam model each suit different systems. Ask why theirs fits your furnace or heat pump, not just what it costs.

Moisés’ HVAC work is exceptional. He installed a return that completely resolved a static build up problem we had. He also installed a whole house humidifier that we are very pleased with. I’d trust SwiftPro for any of my HVAC needs!

Questions
Usually the nearest cold line to the furnace, tapped with a shutoff, plus a drain close by. In a basement it’s a short run. In a crawlspace it can be longer and needs freeze protection.
Usually once a heating season. Well water can crust one sooner, so look at it in midwinter the first year.
It’s priced at your house, in writing, because the model and the work depend on your system, your ducts and where the water line is. If you have one that stopped working, the diagnostic visit is $99.
The EPA says keep indoor humidity between 30 and 50 percent. On the coldest nights we run it nearer the low end so windows don’t sweat, and an Aprilaire with an outdoor sensor turns itself down for you.
