What’s different in Delaplane

Ducts that work hardest in winter, under a ridge that runs colder still.

Delaplane is heating country first. The nearest long-record NOAA station, Warrenton 3 SE, about 18 miles south-southeast, counts more than four heating degree days for every cooling degree day, and January nights there average just under 25 degrees. So the blower in a Delaplane house does most of its yearly running between November and March, pulling the house’s air back through the returns night after night. The ridge runs colder: Mount Weather, a station on the Blue Ridge 10 miles north at 1,659 feet, logs about 5,300 heating degree days to the valley station’s 4,700, and a house partway up the slope sits somewhere between the two.

What that air travels through depends on the fuel. About half of Delaplane’s owner homes burn propane, and the Census counts no owner home in 20144 heating with natural gas. A propane furnace usually carries the air conditioner’s coil on top of it, so one blower and one set of ducts serve both seasons. About three owners in ten heat with electricity, which here usually means a heat pump with its air handler in the basement, the attic or a closet. Either way our tech starts the camera at the return, the side every winter’s air comes back through.

The houses split two ways. Four homes in ten across the ZIP went up in the 1990s, and the typical owner’s house dates from 1986, so a lot of Delaplane ductwork is past thirty and has outlived at least one furnace or heat pump. The older group is the valley’s farm dwellings, many built from fieldstone cleared out of the fields, where the ducts were threaded in long after the walls went up: through a closet, along a later wing, across a crawlspace. Those runs bend more, and the camera has more corners to look around.

Country houses put a few more things in the returns. About one owner in twenty heats with wood, and ash from a stove or an insert settles wherever the return can reach it. And the state’s 2004 survey of the Crooked Run Valley, which takes in Delaplane, found a large share of the valley’s newer houses lived in only on weekends or by season. A house shut up for weeks can collect what a lived-in one doesn’t, insects at the registers and now and then a mouse in a crawlspace run, and all of it shows up on the photos.

What it costs

What duct cleaning costs in Delaplane.

The same price book as our air duct cleaning page, for a home up to 2,000 square feet on one system. We look first: the tech takes a cover off, puts a camera in and photographs what’s in your ducts, then shows you, so you see their current condition before you decide. No charge, including when yours are fine. Then you get the price in writing, then we clean.

  • Return Air Duct Cleaning$298
  • Whole Home Air Duct Cleaning$598, regularly $798
  • Whole Home Air Duct Cleaning with ActivePure Air Scrubber$1,798
  • Dryer Vent Cleaning, on its own$298
  • Dryer Vent Cleaning, added to a duct cleaning$199

A second system bills at 90 percent of the tier, because it’s isolated and cleaned on its own. The calculator on our air duct cleaning page does the arithmetic for a bigger house.

The dryer vent cleaning is the yearly one, and it’s in Comfort+ membership at $199 a year along with a water heater flush with a sewer camera inspection, a heating maintenance visit and a cooling maintenance visit.

When it’s worth doing

When duct cleaning is worth it in Delaplane.

The first cold night blows dust out of the registers

In a weekend house opened up for the season, or any house whose heat sat off since April, the first long heating cycle stirs up whatever settled in the ducts over the summer. One puff is normal. If it comes back cycle after cycle, the camera shows where it’s coming from.

You just bought the place

You don’t know whether the last owners had three cats or ever took a register cover off. Most new owners want it done once, early, so they know what they’re starting with.

You’re seeing it at the registers

Grey fuzz on the register face, or dust back on the furniture a day after you wiped it. That’s the one people usually call about.

Choosing who cleans them

How to pick the best duct cleaning company in Delaplane.

Questions to ask anybody who quotes you, us included.

  1. Do they ask what else heats the house?

A wood stove or a fireplace insert beside the main system changes what ends up in the returns. A company worth hiring asks about it before the visit, and checks the return closest to the stove first.

  2. Do they look before they quote?

Ask whether they’ll put a camera in and show you photos of what’s inside first. A price given at the door, sight unseen, is a price for the average house, not yours.

  3. Do they clean the returns, or only the supply vents?

The returns are the big grilles that pull air back to the system, and they’re the side that collects dust. A job that only counts supply registers leaves half the system alone.

  4. Is the price for the whole system, in writing?

Ask what it covers: every supply and return, the main trunk, the blower compartment. The $59 mailbox coupon covers getting somebody into the attic.

Questions

Duct cleaning questions from Delaplane.

My Delaplane house has a heat pump and a propane furnace. Is that two cleanings?

Usually not. When a heat pump is paired with a propane furnace, the furnace’s blower moves the air for both through one set of ducts, so it’s one system and one price. Two cleanings means two blowers, like a second air handler in the attic for the upstairs. Count the indoor units, not the outdoor ones.

When is the best time to have ducts cleaned in Delaplane?

Spring, once the heat is off for good. Warrenton’s normals put the median last freeze around April 9, and by then the winter’s dust is in the returns. Cleaning before the air conditioner starts means the cooling season begins on clean ducts, and a dryer vent cleaning on the same visit is $199 added on.

How much does air duct cleaning cost in Delaplane?

$598 for Whole Home Air Duct Cleaning, regularly $798, on a home up to 2,000 square feet with one system, $298 for Return Air Duct Cleaning, and $1,798 with an ActivePure air scrubber installed. A dryer vent is $298 on its own or $199 added to a duct cleaning.

Is it worth it?

Sometimes, and the camera photos are how you find out. If the duct walls are furred over, cleaning takes that out of the loop your air runs through, and the before and after are obvious. If the metal is clean, it isn’t worth doing and we’ll say so. The EPA’s position is that routine cleaning hasn’t been shown to prevent health problems, so we don’t sell it that way.
