What’s different in Marshall

Marshall ducts were squeezed into old village houses or built into the newer streets north of Main.

Natural gas barely exists in ZIP 20115, and about six in ten owner homes heat with electricity, usually a heat pump. A heat pump’s blower runs through the heating months as well as the cooling ones, so dust keeps collecting at the returns, the large grilles that feed air back to the equipment. When the camera goes in, the returns come first.

The village is a different job. Fauquier County’s plan for Marshall counts more than 60 buildings from between the World Wars, about 20 houses on Anderson Avenue from the 1920s to the mid 1940s, most of them story-and-a-half frame, and older I-houses on Main Street that stand two stories tall and one room deep. Nobody designed those around ductwork. When central air came, the runs usually went wherever they’d fit: up through closets, inside knee walls, over the attic joists. The camera photos cover those runs too.

North of Main Street the plan puts many houses in the 1960s through the 1990s, and the median owner home in 20115 dates to 1986. That era usually means a sheet-metal main trunk under the first floor, flex branches to the rooms and a single central return on each level. The heat pump may be its third; the ductwork is usually the original.

About eight homes in ten in the ZIP are detached, and on the big lots outside the service district a basement system plus a second one in the attic is often how it’s done. We photograph each system separately and price each on its own line. South of Main Street the plan notes townhouse enclaves around cul-de-sacs, where the air handler is usually tucked in a closet or up in the attic, with short runs. With the ducts, the dryer vent cleaning is $199.

What it costs

What duct cleaning costs in Marshall.

The same price book as our air duct cleaning page, for a home up to 2,000 square feet on one system. We look first: the tech takes a cover off, puts a camera in and photographs what’s in your ducts, then shows you, so you see their current condition before you decide. No charge, including when yours are fine. Then you get the price in writing, then we clean.

  • Return Air Duct Cleaning$298
  • Whole Home Air Duct Cleaning$598, regularly $798
  • Whole Home Air Duct Cleaning with ActivePure Air Scrubber$1,798
  • Dryer Vent Cleaning, on its own$298
  • Dryer Vent Cleaning, added to a duct cleaning$199

A second system bills at 90 percent of the tier, because it’s isolated and cleaned on its own. The calculator on our air duct cleaning page does the arithmetic for a bigger house.

The dryer vent cleaning is the yearly one, and it’s in Comfort+ membership at $199 a year along with a water heater flush with a sewer camera inspection, a heating maintenance visit and a cooling maintenance visit.

When it’s worth doing

When duct cleaning is worth it in Marshall.

There’s a wood stove in the house

About one Marshall owner home in thirteen names wood as its main heat. Some ash gets out whenever a stove is loaded or cleaned out, and the nearest return grille pulls it in. If that grille wears a grey film by March, the photos from inside will show how far the ash went.

Nobody remembers the last time

Which is most houses. Nobody opens a duct, so it never comes up until somebody looks.

You just bought the place

You don’t know whether the last owners had three cats or ever took a register cover off. Most new owners want it done once, early, so they know what they’re starting with.

Questions to ask anybody who quotes you, us included.

  1. Do they ask what heats the house before quoting?

Around Marshall it could be a heat pump, a propane furnace, a wood stove, or two at once. That changes which returns load up and whether there’s a second air handler, so a fair quote starts with the question.

  2. Do they look before they quote?

Ask whether they’ll put a camera in and show you photos of what’s inside first. A price given at the door, sight unseen, is a price for the average house, not yours.

  3. Do they clean the returns, or only the supply vents?

The returns are the big grilles that pull air back to the system, and they’re the side that collects dust. A job that only counts supply registers leaves half the system alone.

  4. Is the price for the whole system, in writing?

Ask what it covers: every supply and return, the main trunk, the blower compartment. The $59 mailbox coupon covers getting somebody into the attic.

Questions

Duct cleaning questions from Marshall.

Do you come out to the farms and big lots outside the village?

Yes, anywhere with a Marshall 20115 address, at Main Street prices. Tell us the number of air handlers and where each one is, so we bring the right ladders and hose.

Will duct cleaning work in a house in Marshall’s historic district?

Usually, if the ductwork can be reached. The National Register district takes in 139 properties on 99 acres, some older than the Civil War, with ducts added long after. The camera shows which runs can be cleaned, and nothing outside changes.

How much does air duct cleaning cost in Marshall?

$598 for Whole Home Air Duct Cleaning, regularly $798, on a home up to 2,000 square feet with one system, $298 for Return Air Duct Cleaning, and $1,798 with an ActivePure air scrubber installed. A dryer vent is $298 on its own or $199 added to a duct cleaning.

Is it worth it?

Sometimes, and the camera photos are how you find out. If the duct walls are furred over, cleaning takes that out of the loop your air runs through, and the before and after are obvious. If the metal is clean, it isn’t worth doing and we’ll say so. The EPA’s position is that routine cleaning hasn’t been shown to prevent health problems, so we don’t sell it that way.
