Windows on a new tight house
Newer Triangle homes have good windows, and the glass usually stays clear until the setting climbs too high. If you see fog at the corners of the glass by morning, turn the humidifier down a few points.

What moves the price is the model and the path to it: a bypass model on an open basement furnace with a water line close by is the simple end, a fan-powered model in a tight closet with a long run for water and a drain is the other.
If the house already has a humidifier that stopped, we look at it first. Often it’s a crusted water panel, a closed saddle valve or a control that lost its wiring, and that’s a repair, not a new unit.
What’s different in Triangle
Triangle is small, about two thousand owner homes, and almost half were built after 2000. Six in ten are detached. The newer ones are tight, with big finished basements and gas furnaces, and they need a modest humidifier set conservatively. The older ones, about one in six built before 1960, are a separate case.
Three quarters of owners here heat with gas, one of the higher shares around, and that makes the bypass Aprilaire the standard answer. The furnace is usually in an unfinished part of the basement with a water line and a floor drain within a few feet. It’s about as easy as a humidifier install gets. Along the newer streets off Route 1, a builder-grade furnace and a straight, short duct trunk are the norm, and short trunks carry humid air well.
The older houses near Route 1 have a different story. They leak air, their ducts may have been added decades after the house, and the furnace could sit in a crawlspace. We look at the access before promising a clean install, and we say so if a room unit makes more sense. On some of those older lots the furnace may sit in a low crawlspace, and a water line there needs real care in a hard freeze.
Prince William Water serves Triangle with Occoquan Reservoir water, treated at the Griffith plant. We don’t have a hardness number for the town, so we treat it like any public supply and show you how to check the pad midwinter. If the builder’s humidifier is already on the furnace, the $99 visit tells you if it can be revived.

The signs
Newer Triangle homes have good windows, and the glass usually stays clear until the setting climbs too high. If you see fog at the corners of the glass by morning, turn the humidifier down a few points.
A zap off every light switch in January means the air in the house is well under 30 percent. Outdoor winter air holds little water, and heating it dries it further.
Wood gives up water in dry air. Gaps between floorboards, a cabinet door that sticks, or a piano that won’t hold its tuning through winter all point the same way.

Choosing who does it
Questions to ask anybody who quotes you one, us included.
A 2005 house and a 1950 farmhouse a mile apart need different size units. If the installer quotes both the same way, keep asking questions.
A humidifier needs a water line and, for most models, a drain. Whoever looks for both before quoting is the one who won’t surprise you on install day.
A bypass model, a fan-powered model and a steam model each suit different systems. Ask why theirs fits your furnace or heat pump, not just what it costs.

Excellent HVAC service for a fair and reasonable price. Moises Rojas fixed my home’s whole house humidifier, which I had no idea wasn’t working for over two years since moving into this house, and now the air in my home is very comfortable.

Questions
Check the duct just above the furnace for a small box with a thin water line. Many builders roughed one in and never turned it on.
Yes, set low. A tight house holds moisture well, so around 30 to 35 percent is enough and keeps the glass dry.
It’s priced at your house, in writing, because the model and the work depend on your system, your ducts and where the water line is. If you have one that stopped working, the diagnostic visit is $99.
The EPA says keep indoor humidity between 30 and 50 percent. On the coldest nights we run it nearer the low end so windows don’t sweat, and an Aprilaire with an outdoor sensor turns itself down for you.
