Triangle’s freezing nights and ice storms, and what they do to furnaces and heat pumps.
The Quantico air station’s records, under four miles off, put the average January low near 28 degrees, with about 76 nights a year at or below freezing. In half of all years the first one arrives by November 8 and the last by March 28. Nights at 10 or colder come fewer than twice a year, so a long cold stretch finds a furnace’s weak part.
Late January 2026 was that stretch: Extreme Cold Warnings on the nights of January 27, 30 and 31, wind chills of zero to 10 below between the Piedmont and I-95, and cold that held into February. A week of nearly nonstop running shows what was about to go: an igniter with a hairline crack, a blower motor running hot, a sticky pressure switch.
Roughly a fifth of Triangle’s owner homes heat with electricity, usually a heat pump. On February 13 and 14, 2021, freezing rain and sleet built ice to about a quarter inch near and east of I-95, Route 1’s side of Triangle. Freezing rain can glaze a heat pump’s coil faster than its defrost cycle clears it. If it’s sealed in ice, switch to emergency heat and call; chipping it off bends fins and can puncture a refrigerant line.
The oldest gas furnaces sit in 1940s and 1950s houses, the first Graham Park sections, Carborough Heights and Mockingbird Heights among them, often venting up one brick chimney with the water heater. Swap either for a high-efficiency unit that vents out the side wall and the chimney is oversized for the one left, so it may need a liner.

- Most heat here is a gas furnace, so most calls come down to the flame sensor, the igniter, the inducer motor or a pressure switch.
- A lot of furnaces here are original and near 20 years old, the age when inducer motors and control boards start to go.

What a failing furnace in Triangle usually does.
It shuts down on the coldest nights
A condensing furnace, the high-efficiency kind with plastic vent pipes, drains a steady trickle of water while it heats, and where that drain line runs outside or through a cold garage it can freeze. The water backs up, a safety switch trips, the burners go out. If yours quits in a cold snap and restarts after a reset, the drain is our first stop.
It lights, then shuts off
The burners fire and go out a few seconds later, over and over. That’s usually a dirty flame sensor, and cleaning it takes about ten minutes.
It won’t light at all
No glow, no flame. A cracked igniter is the usual part, and on a high-efficiency furnace a clogged condensate line can stop it cold too.
What the county says about your heat in Triangle.
Prince William County
Prince William County Fire and Rescue says to have a qualified technician inspect the heating system and chimneys every year, to make sure nothing blocks the fumes from venting out of the house. Source.

How to pick the best furnace repair company in Triangle.
Questions worth asking anybody who comes out, us included.
Do they check the pipes outside after a snowstorm?
The January 2025 storm dropped 6 to 12 inches, heaviest toward Prince William, then gusts to 45 mph and blowing snow, enough to drift over the two plastic pipes a high-efficiency furnace breathes through. A tech who only opens the cabinet can miss a buried or cracked one outside.
Will they price the part before they fix it?
Flame sensors, igniters and control boards all have a going rate. A tech who can’t tell you the number before starting is asking you to find out afterwards.
Do they look at the venting, not just the flame?
Getting the burners lit is half a heating call. Ask whether they check the flue and test for carbon monoxide while the panel’s open.
Do they know when a repair isn’t worth it?
A big repair on a furnace past 15 or 20 years deserves a replacement price next to it. A good tech puts both numbers in front of you and lets you choose.

Heating repair questions from Triangle.
Do I need a permit to replace a gas furnace in Triangle?
Yes, from Prince William County for a gas or propane furnace, even like for like. A heat pump or electric furnace going back in as the same type, in the same spot, needs none, and a repair never does. Addresses inside the Dumfries town limits get theirs from the Town.
I live in base housing at Quantico. Can you fix my heat?
No. Liberty Military Housing owns and looks after the homes on Marine Corps Base Quantico, so a heating problem there goes to Liberty or the base’s Family Housing Office. Off the base, any house, townhouse or condo with Triangle mail is ours.
How much does furnace repair cost in Triangle?
The diagnostic visit is $99. A flame sensor cleaned is $95 to $180; an igniter or flame sensor replaced, $240 to $410; a control board, $550 to $1,180; a blower motor, $670 to $2,400.
Should I repair it or replace it?
Fix the small parts on almost anything. Before a big repair on an old furnace, look at the replacement number: a furnace alone, keeping the air conditioner you have, runs $4,285 to $14,040 installed, and the HVAC estimator gives your number in about a minute.
