What’s different in Triangle

Mild Potomac winters suit a heat pump, in a Triangle rental or beside a gas furnace.

A heat pump pulls its heat from the outdoor air, so what matters is how cold that air gets. NOAA’s 1991 to 2020 normals for the Quantico Marine Corps Air Station, 3.8 miles away at the Potomac’s edge, count 1.8 nights a year at 10 degrees or below, where Dulles Airport counts 4.9. Most of a Triangle winter sits where a properly sized heat pump carries the house without leaning on its backup strips. Wind chill doesn’t count: the outdoor unit only feels the air temperature.

The Census counts 466 of Triangle’s 2,089 owner homes heating with electricity, a bit over one in five, and here that usually means a heat pump. Rentals lean further: 529 of the 1,223 rented homes. If you own one, replace a heat pump that’s living on its strips between leases. On the base itself, family housing belongs to Liberty Military Housing, so on-post residents call their housing office.

Another 1,574 owner homes burn gas, where a heat pump usually takes the air conditioner’s place and the furnace keeps the coldest nights. Washington Gas pays toward that setup only for its own customers, and Columbia Gas of Virginia also serves part of Prince William County, so look at your gas bill; our dual fuel guide has the amounts. The County’s no-permit list covers a heat pump swapped like for like in the same spot; one replacing an air conditioner isn’t, so expect a permit.

Low ground needs a closer look. The National Weather Service’s Little Creek gauge at Route 1 has flooding starting along Fuller Heights Road near Fuller Road at 7 feet, and in June 2018 floodwater submerged a car at Route 1 and Fuller Road. If floodwater reaches your outdoor unit, don’t switch it back on: call us once the water’s down and we’ll check the electrical parts and the compressor before it runs. On low ground, the new unit can sit on a taller stand.

By the numbers

Triangle houses, by the numbers

From the Census Bureau’s 2020 to 2024 survey, owner-occupied homes unless it says otherwise. A heat pump counts as electric heat.

Triangle

  • Median home built2003 Census
  • Built before 1980about 4 in 10 Census
  • Built since 2000about 5 in 10 Census
  • Most homes aresingle-family houses, about 6 in 10 Census
  • Heated withgas, about 8 in 10 Census
  • Rentedabout 4 in 10 Census
  • Most houses here burn gas, so a heat pump usually means dual fuel: it replaces the air conditioner and the furnace stays as backup.
  • Plenty of these houses still run the heat pump or air conditioner the builder installed.
What it costs

What heat pump replacement costs in Triangle.

The same price book as our heating page and the HVAC estimator, for a heat pump and air handler, 2 to 5 ton.

  • A heat pump system, outdoor unit and air handler, installed$8,499 to $21,650
  • A gas furnace and air conditioner together, installed$8,898 to $23,000
  • Diagnostic visit, when a repair may do$99

Might it be a repair? The diagnostic visit is $99, and the tech prices the repair and the replacement side by side. Financing is available, subject to approval.

With Comfort+ membership at $199 a year, the diagnostic visit is included, and half of each repair bill is banked toward replacing that system, up to $1,500.

When it’s time

When a heat pump in Triangle is worth replacing.

Aux heat stayed on through the late January cold

If the thermostat showed aux heat for days during the January 2026 Arctic stretch and the house still ran cool, the heat pump has lost capacity. A $99 diagnostic separates a low charge from a worn compressor before anyone prices a new one.

The AC quit, and you heat with gas

A heat pump can go where the air conditioner sat, heat on mild days and leave the cold nights to the furnace. That’s dual fuel.

It’s the one the builder put in

A heat pump from a 2000s house that’s still original has run every summer and winter since. Once repairs start, price the replacement before the next one.

Permits, locally

The paperwork behind a new heat pump in Triangle.

Prince William County

Prince William County lists any work that alters a home’s heating and air conditioning as permit work, but swapping an electric furnace, heat pump or air conditioning condensing unit for the same type of unit in the same spot is an ordinary repair that needs no permit. Source.

Questions to ask anybody who quotes you, us included.

  1. Did they say where the defrost water goes?

A heat pump melts frost off its outdoor coil and sheds that water under the unit. The Quantico station averages about 76 nights a year at freezing or below, so a unit beside steps or a patio can leave ice where people walk. Ask where the new one will drain.

  2. Did they size it, or copy the old label?

Copying the old nameplate repeats whatever guess was made when the house was built. The wrong size runs worse in both seasons.

  3. Is the air handler in the price?

A heat pump system is the outdoor unit plus the air handler inside. Ask whether the quote covers both, matched, in writing.

  4. Who sets up the backup heat?

Set wrong, the electric strips run on mild days. Ask who programs the thermostat and at what outdoor temperature the strips may come on.

Moises and Oscar did a superlative job doing a custom installation of a new HVAC unit in a tight basement space. And they then took the time to go over system operation. Top tier job and service in all respects!

Questions

Heat pump replacement questions from Triangle.

Can a heat pump keep a 1950s Triangle house warm?

Often, if the ducts can carry it. Heat pump air leaves the registers cooler than a gas furnace’s, so it takes more of it, and ducts from the Carborough Heights or Amidon years were sized for a furnace’s hotter air. We measure the duct runs before quoting; if they come up short, keeping the gas furnace as backup is usually the easier answer.

How much does heat pump replacement cost in Triangle?

$8,499 to $21,650 installed for a heat pump system, the outdoor unit and the air handler, 2 to 5 ton. A small single-stage system lands near the bottom, a big variable-speed one near the top. The HVAC estimator narrows it to your house.

Should I get a heat pump, or a furnace and air conditioner?

A heat pump system runs $8,499 to $21,650 installed; a gas furnace and air conditioner together, $8,898 to $23,000. No gas line usually means a heat pump. With gas, you can keep the furnace and add one; our heat pump vs gas furnace guide runs the numbers.
