The two story foyer that never warms
Tall foyers and great rooms pull dry air up and out. If the front hall feels brittle by midwinter and the wood trim has opened, that’s the sign.

What moves the price is the model and the path to it: a bypass model on an open basement furnace with a water line close by is the simple end, a fan-powered model in a tight closet with a long run for water and a drain is the other.
If the house already has a humidifier that stopped, we look at it first. Often it’s a crusted water panel, a closed saddle valve or a control that lost its wiring, and that’s a repair, not a new unit.
What’s different in Great Falls
The median Great Falls house has about 3,700 square feet above ground and four full bathrooms, and almost every home is detached. A house that size is usually heated by two or three separate systems, one for each wing or floor. A humidifier serves the system it’s mounted on, so a single unit on the basement furnace won’t touch the upstairs or the addition.
That changes how we quote. We count the systems, then decide which ones need a unit. Often it’s the main floor and the bedrooms upstairs and nothing for the guest suite. You may not want to pay to humidify a room nobody sleeps in, and we won’t talk you into it.
Heat is gas at 46 percent, electric at 39, and propane at 8, a higher share of propane than most of Fairfax County. Propane furnaces behave like gas ones, so a bypass model suits them. A heat pump takes the fan-powered type. In a house with both, you may end up with one of each.
About 3,500 wells are active in 22066, so many Great Falls houses draw from one. If yours does, we ask about softener and filter first, since scale builds on a water panel fastest on hard water. Houses from the 1970s and 80s, half the town, also lose air quickly, which pushes the output you want up.

The signs
Tall foyers and great rooms pull dry air up and out. If the front hall feels brittle by midwinter and the wood trim has opened, that’s the sign.
A zap off every light switch in January means the air in the house is well under 30 percent. Outdoor winter air holds little water, and heating it dries it further.
Wood gives up water in dry air. Gaps between floorboards, a cabinet door that sticks, or a piano that won’t hold its tuning through winter all point the same way.

Choosing who does it
Questions to ask anybody who quotes you one, us included.
In a house this size, a quote for one humidifier may be covering a third of it. Ask which parts of the house it will reach.
A humidifier needs a water line and, for most models, a drain. Whoever looks for both before quoting is the one who won’t surprise you on install day.
A bypass model, a fan-powered model and a steam model each suit different systems. Ask why theirs fits your furnace or heat pump, not just what it costs.

Rich came out to give us an estimate and setup installation of a whole home humidifier. He was friendly, on-time, and very knowledgeable and made sure we were getting what would work best for our home. Highly recommend!
Questions
Not if it has two or three systems. A humidifier works through the ducts it’s connected to, so each system needs its own, or you leave parts of the house dry.
Yes. A propane furnace gives off warm supply air like a gas furnace, so a bypass model works there.
It’s priced at your house, in writing, because the model and the work depend on your system, your ducts and where the water line is. If you have one that stopped working, the diagnostic visit is $99.
The EPA says keep indoor humidity between 30 and 50 percent. On the coldest nights we run it nearer the low end so windows don’t sweat, and an Aprilaire with an outdoor sensor turns itself down for you.
