Static and a front door that sticks
In a Hamilton house of any age, dry winter air shows up as shocks off the doorknob, a sticking door and window sashes that stop closing right. Those are wood and paint reacting to the air.

What moves the price is the model and the path to it: a bypass model on an open basement furnace with a water line close by is the simple end, a fan-powered model in a tight closet with a long run for water and a drain is the other.
If the house already has a humidifier that stopped, we look at it first. Often it’s a crusted water panel, a closed saddle valve or a control that lost its wiring, and that’s a repair, not a new unit.
What’s different in Hamilton
Hamilton does not sort into one neighborhood type. About four in ten owner homes were built before 1980, the farmhouses and the town’s older streets, and four in ten went up in 2000 or later. The older ones leak outdoor air and dry out faster, so they need more output. The newer ones are tighter and need less. Put the same unit in both and one of them is either parched or running water down the windows.
Gas is almost absent here, under two in a hundred owners. Half heat with electricity, which usually means a heat pump, and nearly three in ten use propane. Propane furnaces behave like gas for a humidifier, so a bypass model suits them. The heat pump houses want a fan-powered one, since the supply air is cooler and a bypass needs warmth to evaporate.
Nine in ten homes are detached, so there are few shared walls to worry about, and the usual picture is a furnace or air handler in a basement, closet or crawlspace with a cold-water pipe somewhere nearby. In an older frame house the question is whether the ductwork runs where a drain can reach. We have seen humidifiers that stopped because the drain line sagged and backed up, which is a fix, not a replacement.
The Town of Hamilton runs its own wells, and the 2025 water report prints no hardness figure, so we won’t guess one. What we can say is that mineral-heavy water crusts the water panel faster in any house, and a humidifier on well water usually wants its pad changed more often.
By the numbers
From the Census Bureau’s 2020 to 2024 survey. Median year built and heat count owner-occupied homes only.
ZIP 20158 as a whole: every Hamilton address, the Town and the countryside around it. The Census place for the Town alone has too few homes for steady figures.
The signs
In a Hamilton house of any age, dry winter air shows up as shocks off the doorknob, a sticking door and window sashes that stop closing right. Those are wood and paint reacting to the air.
A zap off every light switch in January means the air in the house is well under 30 percent. Outdoor winter air holds little water, and heating it dries it further.
Wood gives up water in dry air. Gaps between floorboards, a cabinet door that sticks, or a piano that won’t hold its tuning through winter all point the same way.

Choosing who does it
Questions to ask anybody who quotes you one, us included.
Out here neighbors on the same road can heat three different ways. Whoever quotes should check your own furnace or air handler before recommending a model, not assume.
A humidifier needs a water line and, for most models, a drain. Whoever looks for both before quoting is the one who won’t surprise you on install day.
A bypass model, a fan-powered model and a steam model each suit different systems. Ask why theirs fits your furnace or heat pump, not just what it costs.

Rich came out to give us an estimate and setup installation of a whole home humidifier. He was friendly, on-time, and very knowledgeable and made sure we were getting what would work best for our home. Highly recommend!

Questions
A bypass model, in most cases. Propane gives a warm supply air like gas does, and that warmth is what the bypass unit uses to evaporate water.
Often not. A crusted water panel, a closed valve or a control that lost power is more common than a dead unit, and the $99 visit finds out which.
It’s priced at your house, in writing, because the model and the work depend on your system, your ducts and where the water line is. If you have one that stopped working, the diagnostic visit is $99.
The EPA says keep indoor humidity between 30 and 50 percent. On the coldest nights we run it nearer the low end so windows don’t sweat, and an Aprilaire with an outdoor sensor turns itself down for you.
