What’s different in Hamilton

Hamilton has two kinds of showers side by side, and the house tells us which repair to expect.

On any loose handle, we start with the screw. It is usually a small one, under the cap or on the underside of the handle, and it backs out. If it is tight and the handle still turns freely, the grip inside the handle or on the stem is worn, and we replace whichever is rounder.

In Hamilton’s ZIP, about one home in six was built before 1960, and four in ten since 2000. Between them sits a 1988 median. A house from before 1960 may still have separate hot and cold handles with a stem and a washer behind each, and those drip when a washer wears. A house from the last twenty-five years has a single lever and a cartridge, and that is what drips there. Same complaint, different part, and we know before we start which to expect.

The Town’s 2025 water quality report says its three wells are chlorinated, with iron and manganese removed, and prints no hardness figure. We won’t hand you a number the Town hasn’t published. What we can do is look: scale on the old cartridge, or none, tells us what your water does to a valve. Outside the Town’s lines, many homes are probably on their own wells, and those can carry more iron.

Nine in ten homes here are detached, so the tub usually sits against an outside wall or a closet, and the valve is reachable through a panel or from the front of the trim. In the few townhouses and the small buildings, the neighbor’s bath may be on the other side of the wall. Those get a more careful look at where the water goes if a valve weeps.

  • Many houses here were built since 2000 with single-handle pressure-balancing valves, where a loose handle or a drip is almost always a cartridge.
  • Most homes here are detached houses, where the shower valve can often be reached from a closet or a panel behind the wall.

The signs

When a shower in Hamilton needs a plumber.

Which shower you have

Two handles on the wall means stems and washers. One lever means a cartridge. Knowing which saves you a quote for the wrong repair.

The handle is loose or spins

Usually a set screw under the cap that backed out, or worn teeth where the handle grips the cartridge. Tightening the screw only lasts if the teeth are still good.

It drips after it’s off

On a single-handle shower that’s the cartridge. On an older two-handle or three-handle shower, it’s the washers or the stems. Either one comes out the front, and the wall stays closed.

Choosing who does it

How to pick who fixes a shower in Hamilton.

Questions to ask anybody who pulls your shower handle off, us included.

  1. Did they ask how old the house is and how many handles the shower has?

Those two answers decide the part. A plumber who asks before arriving can bring the right stems or cartridge and finish in one visit.

  2. Did they pull the handle before quoting a new valve?

Most loose handles and drips are a cartridge or a screw. A plumber who prices a new valve without looking inside first may be selling you a wall you didn’t need opened.

  3. Did they test it with a toilet flushed?

A shower that runs fine on its own can still jump hot when someone flushes. Ask them to run it both ways before they pack up.

Questions

Shower repair questions from Hamilton.

Our Hamilton farmhouse shower has two handles and the cold one drips. What’s the repair?

It is a stem or a washer, and it comes out through the front. A repair like that usually lands at $250 to $450. We show you the worn washer before the price.

Does Hamilton’s town water wear out shower cartridges?

The Town removes iron and manganese and doesn’t publish a hardness figure, so we can’t quote one. We look at the old cartridge and tell you what we see. If it is clean and the seals are cut, it simply wore out.

How much is shower repair in Hamilton?

Most shower valve repairs we do run $250 to $450, with the visit at $49, $250 after hours. A whole new valve with trim runs $950 to $1,400, and a tub spout runs $200 to $400.

Will you have to open the wall or break tile?

Not for a cartridge, a handle or a diverter. Those come out the front. A valve replacement goes in from an access panel when there is one, and when there isn’t, a larger trim plate can usually cover the opening so the tile stays.
