What moves the price is the model and the path to it: a bypass model on an open basement furnace with a water line close by is the simple end, a fan-powered model in a tight closet with a long run for water and a drain is the other.

If the house already has a humidifier that stopped, we look at it first. Often it’s a crusted water panel, a closed saddle valve or a control that lost its wiring, and that’s a repair, not a new unit.

What’s different in McLean

In McLean, a house with radiators or baseboard may have nothing to hang a humidifier on.

Hot-water heat is more common in McLean than anywhere else we work. A boiler sends heat through pipes to radiators or baseboard, and no air moves through the house, so there’s no duct for a humidifier to ride. That’s the opposite of Reston or Herndon, where nearly every house is ducted.

If a McLean house has hot-water heat and central air conditioning, the air conditioner’s ducts can carry a humidifier, though it only works while the blower is running. If it has neither, a whole-home unit may not be the right tool, and we’ll say so rather than sell you one. Some of these houses are better off with a tabletop unit in the bedrooms.

For the ducted houses, two thirds of owners heat with gas, so a bypass Aprilaire is the usual answer, and the 31 percent on electric take the fan-powered kind. Twelve percent of McLean’s owner homes are from before 1960, large old houses with the plaster, the trim and the hardwood that dry-air gaps hit hardest.

The other McLean is 42 percent condos and apartments around Tysons, and a third of homes were built since 2000. Those are tight, ducted and small, so a fan-powered unit on a small setting is the match. Out Old Dominion Drive and Towlston Road there are about 750 wells, so ask us about scale from hard water.

The signs

When a McLean house is too dry in winter.

The dining room table that opens a seam

Big old McLean houses have solid wood furniture and plank floors. A table leaf that no longer fits or a seam that opens in January is a dry house talking.

Static every time you touch a doorknob

A zap off every light switch in January means the air in the house is well under 30 percent. Outdoor winter air holds little water, and heating it dries it further.

Floors and trim open up gaps

Wood gives up water in dry air. Gaps between floorboards, a cabinet door that sticks, or a piano that won’t hold its tuning through winter all point the same way.

Choosing who does it

How to pick who installs a humidifier in McLean.

Questions to ask anybody who quotes you one, us included.

  1. Did they ask how the house is heated?

Anyone quoting a McLean house without asking about a boiler, radiators or baseboard may be selling something it can’t use.

  2. Did they ask where the water and the drain come from?

A humidifier needs a water line and, for most models, a drain. Whoever looks for both before quoting is the one who won’t surprise you on install day.

  3. Did they say which kind, and why?

A bypass model, a fan-powered model and a steam model each suit different systems. Ask why theirs fits your furnace or heat pump, not just what it costs.

Excellent HVAC service for a fair and reasonable price. Moises Rojas fixed my home’s whole house humidifier, which I had no idea wasn’t working for over two years since moving into this house, and now the air in my home is very comfortable.

Questions

Humidifier questions from McLean.

My McLean house has radiators. Can I still get one?

Only if there’s a ducted air handler for cooling. If there is, a humidifier can ride it. If there’s no ductwork, we will tell you a whole-home unit isn’t the fit.

Is a humidifier worth it in a new Tysons condo?

Often a small setting is all it takes, since a tight unit holds moisture well. Look at your windows in January before deciding.

How much is a whole-home humidifier in McLean?

It’s priced at your house, in writing, because the model and the work depend on your system, your ducts and where the water line is. If you have one that stopped working, the diagnostic visit is $99.

What humidity should the house be at in winter?

The EPA says keep indoor humidity between 30 and 50 percent. On the coldest nights we run it nearer the low end so windows don’t sweat, and an Aprilaire with an outdoor sensor turns itself down for you.
