What moves the price is the model and the path to it: a bypass model on an open basement furnace with a water line close by is the simple end, a fan-powered model in a tight closet with a long run for water and a drain is the other.
If the house already has a humidifier that stopped, we look at it first. Often it’s a crusted water panel, a closed saddle valve or a control that lost its wiring, and that’s a repair, not a new unit.
What’s different in Ashburn
Seven in ten owner homes across Ashburn, Brambleton and Broadlands were built in 2000 or later, and a house built to those codes lets in far less outside air than a 1970s colonial. That cuts both ways in January. The air that does get in is bone dry, so you still get the static and the gapping floors, but a modest humidifier keeps up, and one cranked too high puts water on the windows by morning.
Better than eight in ten Ashburn owners heat with gas, which suits a bypass model: the furnace’s warm supply air does the evaporating, and the unit needs no fan of its own. The heat pump homes, about one in six here, push cooler air through the same ducts, and a fan-powered Aprilaire does better there. We look at which one you have before we talk models.
Townhouses are close to four in ten homes in Ashburn, and many put the second system in the attic. We’d rather not hang a humidifier up there: the water line runs through a space that freezes, and a slow drip sits right over a bedroom ceiling. In those houses we usually serve the main system in the basement or utility closet, which reaches most of the living space anyway. In a condo, the water line and the drain may need the association’s sign-off.
A lot of houses here came with a builder’s humidifier already on the furnace. Plenty of them still have the water panel from closing day and a saddle valve somebody turned off the first summer. Before anyone sells you a new one, the $99 visit tells you whether the one you have just needs a pad, the valve opened and its control wired back in.

The signs
Floors put into Ashburn houses during a remodel often open up between boards by February. Holding the house in the mid 30s through winter keeps the wood closer to how it was laid.
A zap off every light switch in January means the air in the house is well under 30 percent. Outdoor winter air holds little water, and heating it dries it further.
Wood gives up water in dry air. Gaps between floorboards, a cabinet door that sticks, or a piano that won’t hold its tuning through winter all point the same way.

Choosing who does it
Questions to ask anybody who quotes you one, us included.
In a townhouse with two systems, where the humidifier goes matters as much as which one. Ask why they picked that furnace, and where the water line will run.
A humidifier needs a water line and, for most models, a drain. Whoever looks for both before quoting is the one who won’t surprise you on install day.
A bypass model, a fan-powered model and a steam model each suit different systems. Ask why theirs fits your furnace or heat pump, not just what it costs.

Excellent HVAC service for a fair and reasonable price. Moises Rojas fixed my home’s whole house humidifier, which I had no idea wasn’t working for over two years since moving into this house, and now the air in my home is very comfortable.
Questions
Look on the ductwork just above the furnace for a box with a thin water line running to it, and a dial on the wall or the duct nearby. If it’s there but dry, it may only need the pad and the valve.
Only if it’s set too high for the weather. In a tight Ashburn house, holding about 35 percent and letting an outdoor sensor lower it on the coldest nights keeps the glass dry.
It’s priced at your house, in writing, because the model and the work depend on your system, your ducts and where the water line is. If you have one that stopped working, the diagnostic visit is $99.
The EPA says keep indoor humidity between 30 and 50 percent. On the coldest nights we run it nearer the low end so windows don’t sweat, and an Aprilaire with an outdoor sensor turns itself down for you.
