Which Haymarket do you live in?

What moves the price is the model and the path to it: a bypass model on an open basement furnace with a water line close by is the simple end, a fan-powered model in a tight closet with a long run for water and a drain is the other.
If the house already has a humidifier that stopped, we look at it first. Often it’s a crusted water panel, a closed saddle valve or a control that lost its wiring, and that’s a repair, not a new unit.
What’s different in Haymarket
Inside the Town of Haymarket, nearly six in ten owner homes went up between 1980 and 1999. Across the whole 20169 ZIP, which takes in Dominion Valley and Piedmont, nearly eight in ten were built after 2000. We treat them differently. A 1990 house with its original windows loses air on a windy night, while a Dominion Valley house from 2008 mostly does not.
Heat splits the town too. About 63 percent of Haymarket town owners heat with gas, and 36 percent with electric, one of the larger electric shares in this part of the county. If yours is a heat pump, the warm air is not warm enough for a bypass humidifier to work well, so we steer you to the fan-powered Aprilaire. Gas furnace, bypass; heat pump, fan-powered.
Up the mountain, Bull Run Mountain Estates is a different story. Houses there are often on private wells and have larger lots, and some have a furnace in a crawlspace. Well water carries minerals, so a water panel can crust faster, which makes a yearly pad change a requirement. If you are unsure whether you are on a well, tell us your street.
Many Dominion Valley and Piedmont houses are large enough to have two systems, one up and one down. We usually put the humidifier on the one that serves the bedrooms, since that is where people notice dry air and static at night. A whole-home humidifier does not need to be on both.
Neighborhood by neighborhood
Census figures for the owner-occupied homes in each place, and the humidifier that usually suits houses like them.
| Place | Median home built | Most homes are | Heated with | What usually fits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bull Run Mountain Estates | 1978 | single-family houses, nearly all | electricity, about 4 in 10 | A fan-powered model, since heat pump air runs cooler. |
| Haymarket | 1995 | single-family houses, about 6 in 10 | gas, about 6 in 10 | A bypass model on the gas furnace’s ductwork. |
By the numbers
From the Census Bureau’s 2020 to 2024 survey. Median year built and heat count owner-occupied homes only.
Inside the town limits only, about one in eighteen of the owner homes with Haymarket mail. Dominion Valley, Piedmont and Bull Run Mountain Estates sit outside it, in the county.
ZIP 20169 as a whole: every Haymarket address, the Town’s homes included.
The signs
A town house from the 1990s, a mountain house on a well and a big Piedmont house on two systems each want a different setup, and a quote that ignores that is a guess.
A zap off every light switch in January means the air in the house is well under 30 percent. Outdoor winter air holds little water, and heating it dries it further.
Wood gives up water in dry air. Gaps between floorboards, a cabinet door that sticks, or a piano that won’t hold its tuning through winter all point the same way.

Choosing who does it
Questions to ask anybody who quotes you one, us included.
It changes how fast the pad scales, and it changes the maintenance. Ask what they plan to do if the water is hard.
A humidifier needs a water line and, for most models, a drain. Whoever looks for both before quoting is the one who won’t surprise you on install day.
A bypass model, a fan-powered model and a steam model each suit different systems. Ask why theirs fits your furnace or heat pump, not just what it costs.

Moisés’ HVAC work is exceptional. He installed a return that completely resolved a static build up problem we had. He also installed a whole house humidifier that we are very pleased with. I’d trust SwiftPro for any of my HVAC needs!

Questions
Most people do not need a big one. Newer houses are tight, so a small output is plenty, and you save by not over-sizing.
It does. A heat pump makes cooler air than a gas furnace, so a fan-powered humidifier is the usual match. We check the system before we pick.
It’s priced at your house, in writing, because the model and the work depend on your system, your ducts and where the water line is. If you have one that stopped working, the diagnostic visit is $99.
The EPA says keep indoor humidity between 30 and 50 percent. On the coldest nights we run it nearer the low end so windows don’t sweat, and an Aprilaire with an outdoor sensor turns itself down for you.
