What’s different in Haymarket

Haymarket is mostly gas, so the heat pump here is the exception to understand.

Most Haymarket houses burn gas, which makes the ones with a heat pump easy to overlook until January. Inside the town limits about 36 percent of owner homes heat with electricity, and a bit under a quarter do across the whole 20169 ZIP. Those homes tend to be the townhouse rows and the older builder-grade houses, and the owners usually call once the heat quits and the electric bill doesn’t.

Age tells you what to expect. The typical owner home in town dates to 1995, so a heat pump that came with the house has either been replaced once already or is running on borrowed time, and a 1990s unit very often holds R-22. The ZIP around town is far younger: nearly eight owner homes in ten went up since 2000, which puts most Dominion Valley and Piedmont pumps in the years when capacitors, contactors and defrost boards start to fail. Variable-speed models from the last decade fail on a sensor or a board far more often than a mechanical part.

The town lists two electric companies, Dominion and NOVEC, and that matters on one particular call. After a storm outage, a heat pump that won’t restart is rarely the utility’s fault; it’s usually a tripped breaker, a low-voltage fuse on the air handler, or a thermostat that lost its settings. Walk through those three first and it saves a visit about half the time.

A house with a heat pump on the gas side of town often has a gas furnace as the backup instead of strips, which changes what we check. If the furnace takes over below a set temperature and never does, the switchover setting or the outdoor sensor is the suspect. We read both before touching refrigerant. If your gas furnace is the one acting up, the Haymarket furnace repair page covers that side.

  • Most homes here heat with gas. Where a heat pump sits over a gas furnace, the furnace takes over in the cold, so a dead heat pump can go unnoticed until spring.

What you’d notice

What a heat pump in trouble in Haymarket usually does.

It heats, but only the gas side seems to work

On a dual setup the heat pump should carry the house down to a chosen cold point. If your furnace is running on a mild 40 degree day, the heat pump is being skipped, and you are paying gas rates for heat the pump should have made.

Aux or emergency heat that never goes off

When the outdoor unit stops pulling its weight, the electric strips in the air handler carry the house. The house stays warm, and the bill tells you a few weeks later. A stuck contactor is a common reason, and one of the cheapest fixes on our list.

Upstairs cold, downstairs fine

In a newer two-story house on one heat pump, the top floor lagging a few degrees can be ducts or the thermostat’s settings, not a failing unit. We check the system first and tell you which it is.

Choosing who fixes it

How to pick a heat pump repair company in Haymarket.

Questions worth asking anybody who comes out, us included.

  1. Do they ask whether your backup is strips or a furnace?

In Haymarket it can be either, and each fails in different places. A tech who goes straight to the refrigerant gauges without asking what the backup is hasn’t yet worked out which half of your system is the problem.

  2. Is the company licensed in Virginia?

Anyone can check on the state’s license lookup. Ours is Virginia Class A contractor license, on every van.

  3. Do they price the repair before they start?

Every heat pump repair on our list has a range, and you hear where yours lands before a part goes in. If someone can’t give you a number until it’s done, keep looking.

  4. Will they tell you when it’s not worth fixing?

An older heat pump with a refrigerant leak is often a bad repair. A good tech says so, with the repair price and the replacement price side by side.

Questions

Heat pump questions from Haymarket.

My Dominion Valley heat pump is about twenty years old and running. Should I wait for it to fail?

Not if it’s making noise or short-cycling. A $99 diagnostic visit tells you whether a $240 to $370 capacitor or a $290 to $425 contactor is behind it. A cheap part caught early beats a compressor failure in a cold snap, and if the numbers say replacement is closer, we show you both side by side.

Does a Haymarket heat pump need anything special in an outage?

After power returns, give the system a few minutes before touching the thermostat; many units wait several minutes before the compressor restarts. If nothing starts in ten minutes, check the breaker, then the switch on the air handler, then call.

Why does my heat pump in Haymarket steam and go quiet in the cold?

That’s defrost. The unit stops the outdoor fan, runs backwards for a few minutes to melt frost off the coil, and you see steam rising. It’s normal. Ice that stays is not.

How much does heat pump repair cost in Haymarket?

The diagnostic visit is $99. From our price book, a capacitor is $240 to $370, a contactor $290 to $425, and a defrost board $450 to $1,150. You get the number before we start.
