The power came back and the outdoor unit didn’t
Look at the outdoor unit after an outage. If the thermostat calls for heat and the fan is still, it isn’t waiting on the utility. Check the breaker first, then call.

What’s different in Casanova
Casanova is a hamlet with no town water and no gas, so each house is its own small utility. About half the owner homes in the ZIP heat with electricity and nearly three in ten with propane, and all of them are detached. When the power flickers out here, the heat, the water and often the cooking go at once.
So the most common Casanova call after a storm isn’t a broken pump; it’s a pump that won’t come back. Power returns, and the outdoor unit sits still. Usually it’s a breaker that tripped on the surge, a fuse on the air handler’s control board, or a thermostat that dropped its setting. Check the breaker, flip the thermostat to heat and wait five minutes before calling. If the well pump came back and the heat pump didn’t, that points us to the heat pump’s own circuit.
Homes built since 1980 make up most of the ZIP, and many are on a second pump now. A pump from the 1990s here is likely at the stage where the contactor pits and the capacitor weakens, so the unit hums and doesn’t start. That humming-but-silent fan is one of the cheapest repairs we do, and the parts are common.
More than one house in eight in the ZIP burns wood or something else for main heat, and propane is common, so the heat pump here often shares the job. We ask which heat is meant to run first. If a stove or furnace has been quietly taking over, the pump may have been down for weeks before anyone noticed.
By the numbers
From the Census Bureau’s 2020 to 2024 survey. Median year built and heat count owner-occupied homes only.
Casanova’s own ZIP, 20139, is post office boxes only, so the Census Bureau maps no area for it. These are ZIP 20119 as a whole, the Catlett ZIP area Casanova sits in.
What you’d notice
Look at the outdoor unit after an outage. If the thermostat calls for heat and the fan is still, it isn’t waiting on the utility. Check the breaker first, then call.
When the outdoor unit stops pulling its weight, the electric strips in the air handler carry the house. The house stays warm, and the bill tells you a few weeks later. A stuck contactor is a common reason, and one of the cheapest fixes on our list.
A little frost on a cold morning is normal, and the unit melts it off every so often by running backwards for a few minutes. Ice that builds for hours and covers the whole coil usually means the defrost board, a sensor, or low refrigerant.

Choosing who fixes it
Questions worth asking anybody who comes out, us included.
In Casanova a storm can leave a tripped breaker, a blown control fuse or a damaged contactor. A tech who goes straight to refrigerant isn’t looking where the outage did its damage.
Anyone can check on the state’s license lookup. Ours is Virginia Class A contractor license, on every van.
Every heat pump repair on our list has a range, and you hear where yours lands before a part goes in. If someone can’t give you a number until it’s done, keep looking.
An older heat pump with a refrigerant leak is often a bad repair. A good tech says so, with the repair price and the replacement price side by side.

Excellent work done honestly and efficiently. Efrain the technician was great. Was able to diagnose the problem quickly and get my older Amana gas furnace system working again.

Questions
Usually the capacitor at $240 to $370 range. Turn the unit off at the breaker and don’t poke at it; capacitors hold a charge. A $99 diagnostic visit confirms it before any part is changed.
Yes, for a day or two if the pump has quit. It heats with strips and costs more per hour, but it keeps the pipes safe. Our heat pump repair page has the winter checklist.
That’s defrost. The unit stops the outdoor fan, runs backwards for a few minutes to melt frost off the coil, and you see steam rising. It’s normal. Ice that stays is not.
