Casanova cooling: warm July nights, a 2021 windstorm, and heat pumps that never get a season off.
Casanova holds two kinds of house. In the village, the frame I-houses of its National Register district went up around 1900, and their cooling came generations later: an air handler tucked into an attic or a closet, or a ductless head on a bedroom wall. Out along Rogues and Casanova Roads the houses are younger. In ZIP 20119, the Census area Casanova sits in, every owner home is detached and the typical one went up in 1990. A little over half those owners heat with electricity, which in a house that size usually means a heat pump, so the outdoor unit that quits in July is the same one that heated the place in January.
Summer here doesn’t ease off after dark. NOAA’s Warrenton 3 SE station, about three miles west-northwest of the village, averages a July high near 85 and a July low near 66, so during a hot spell the house never really cools down overnight and the compressor keeps going. Roughly three weeks’ worth of afternoons top 90 in a normal year, and on July 20 and 21, 2019, the Weather Service put heat index values above 110 across southern Fauquier. Stretches like that finish off a weak run capacitor, $240 to $370 to replace, or a contactor whose points have burned, $290 to $425.
Wind is the other summer hazard. On August 13, 2021, thunderstorm gusts estimated at 60 knots, close to 70 mph, blew numerous trees down where Casanova Road meets Meetze Road, about a mile west-northwest of the village. After a blow like that, look before you switch the cooling back on: a limb resting on the top grille, the cabinet knocked crooked on its pad, the insulated copper lines crushed or pulled loose, the disconnect box on the wall torn open. If you find any of it, leave the breaker off and call us once the storm passes; we’ll go over the outdoor unit, its wiring and the indoor coil before it runs again.
The village sits about 373 feet up, on ground FEMA maps as minimal flood hazard, but FEMA marks a flood zone along Turkey Run at Meetze Road, and the roads around Casanova go under in a downpour. Rogues Road closed for flooding on November 12, 2020, and on July 16, 2025, a foot of water ran across Balls Mill Road near Moopack Lane. If water climbed to the outdoor unit, or into a basement where the air handler sits, don’t run it to see whether it still works. Floodwater gets into the fan motor, the capacitor and the control board, and powering them up wet can finish what the water started.
Casanova houses, by the numbers
From the Census Bureau’s 2020 to 2024 survey. Median year built and heat count owner-occupied homes only.
Casanova
Casanova’s own ZIP, 20139, is post office boxes only, so the Census Bureau maps no area for it. These are ZIP 20119 as a whole, the Catlett ZIP area Casanova sits in.
- Median home built1990 Census
- Built before 1980about 4 in 10 Census
- Built since 2000about 2 in 10 Census
- Most homes aresingle-family houses, nearly all Census

- Rentedabout 2 in 10 Census
- Electric heat here usually means a heat pump, so the outdoor unit works all year and an AC problem is often a heating problem waiting for January.

What a failing AC in Casanova usually does.
A brown ring on the ceiling below the attic unit
When cooling goes into an old house after the fact, the air handler often lands in the attic, with a pan under it and a thin drain line carrying the water off. Over a summer of steady running that line can clog, the pan fills, and the first sign is a stain on the ceiling underneath. Clearing the condensate drain is $175 to $420.
The heat pump is icing up in summer
Ice on the outdoor lines in July means low refrigerant or starved airflow. Shut it off to thaw and call; running it iced can take out the compressor.
The air coming out is warm
Usually the outdoor unit has stopped running. A hum with no fan turning is almost always the run capacitor; silence while the thermostat calls is usually the contactor.
How to pick the best AC repair company in Casanova.
Questions worth asking anybody who comes out, us included.
Will they work on a ductless head as well as a central system?
An old house that got its cooling in stages may have both: a central system for most rooms and a ductless head where the ducts never reached. Ask whether the tech services each one, since a ductless head has its own filter, drain and outdoor unit.
Do they publish prices?
A company that prints what a capacitor or a contactor costs has already told you the number. One that won’t say until the tech is in your driveway hasn’t.
Do they measure before they sell refrigerant?
A healthy system drops the air somewhere around 16 to 22 degrees across the indoor coil. Low refrigerant means a leak, and topping it up every summer is the expensive way to find that out.
Will they tell you when it’s the end of the road?
Some repairs aren’t worth doing on a 20-year-old system. The good answer shows you the repair price and the replacement price side by side and lets you pick.

AC repair questions from Casanova.
A tree came down on my Casanova outdoor unit. Repair or replace?
That depends on what it hit. Fins bent flat can often be combed straight. A punctured coil or a crushed copper line means a refrigerant leak, and a leak repair runs $1,850 to $2,700. On a unit old enough to run R-22, that money usually goes further toward a new system, and the HVAC estimator gives you that number to set beside the repair.
How much does AC repair cost in Casanova?
The diagnostic visit is $99. The common repairs: a run capacitor $240 to $370, a contactor $290 to $425, a condensate drain cleared $175 to $420, refrigerant topped up $190 to $740. A refrigerant leak repair runs $1,850 to $2,700.
Should I repair it or replace it?
Fix the cheap parts on almost anything. Think twice about a big repair on a system over 15 years old, and about any leak on an R-22 system. The HVAC estimator prices a new system in about a minute, so you can put the two numbers side by side.
