What moves the price is the model and the path to it: a bypass model on an open basement furnace with a water line close by is the simple end, a fan-powered model in a tight closet with a long run for water and a drain is the other.

If the house already has a humidifier that stopped, we look at it first. Often it’s a crusted water panel, a closed saddle valve or a control that lost its wiring, and that’s a repair, not a new unit.

What’s different in Dunn Loring

Dunn Loring’s 1990s furnaces are the ones due for replacement.

Dunn Loring is a small ZIP with about 600 owner homes, nearly all detached, and the typical one was built in 1991. That puts the average furnace at over thirty years old. A humidifier is mounted on that furnace’s ductwork, so the first question is whether the furnace has years left.

If it does, a bypass model on the existing duct is simple. If it is near the end, it’s smarter to wait and put the humidifier on the new one, since the duct connection gets cut up anyway. Doing both in one visit saves a second trip and the second cut in the sheet metal. We tell you which makes sense after we see the furnace.

About two thirds of owners here heat with gas and 28 percent use electric, so most get a bypass Aprilaire and the heat pump houses get the fan-powered one. Half the houses are from the 1980s and 90s, tighter than a 1960s house but not tight like a new rebuild, so a mid-sized unit holds them.

Many Dunn Loring addresses share a mailing name with Vienna, and the houses in the two places look alike. If you found the Vienna advice, much of it applies. The difference is that these houses were built to a later code, with fewer leaks. A look at the humidifier page shows what a visit covers.

  • Houses from the 80s and 90s often came with a builder’s humidifier on the furnace, and many of those are still on the duct, switched off.
  • Most homes here are detached houses with the furnace in a basement or utility room, which usually leaves room for a bypass model on the ductwork.

The signs

When a Dunn Loring house is too dry in winter.

The thermostat on 68 that feels like 62

Dry air feels cooler than humid air at the same reading. If your family keeps raising the thermostat in winter and still feels chilly, the air may be too dry rather than too cold.

Static every time you touch a doorknob

A zap off every light switch in January means the air in the house is well under 30 percent. Outdoor winter air holds little water, and heating it dries it further.

Floors and trim open up gaps

Wood gives up water in dry air. Gaps between floorboards, a cabinet door that sticks, or a piano that won’t hold its tuning through winter all point the same way.

Choosing who does it

How to pick who installs a humidifier in Dunn Loring.

Questions to ask anybody who quotes you one, us included.

  1. Did they check the furnace’s age first?

If the furnace is thirty years old, installing a humidifier on it now and a new furnace in two years means paying for the work twice.

  2. Did they ask where the water and the drain come from?

A humidifier needs a water line and, for most models, a drain. Whoever looks for both before quoting is the one who won’t surprise you on install day.

  3. Did they say which kind, and why?

A bypass model, a fan-powered model and a steam model each suit different systems. Ask why theirs fits your furnace or heat pump, not just what it costs.

Questions

Humidifier questions from Dunn Loring.

Should I replace the furnace before adding a humidifier?

Only if it is near the end. A furnace that still runs well can carry a humidifier, and we’ll tell you what we see.

Does a humidifier work on a gas furnace this old?

Yes. The bypass model needs warm supply air and a spot on the duct. Age doesn’t matter if the furnace is sound.

How much is a whole-home humidifier in Dunn Loring?

It’s priced at your house, in writing, because the model and the work depend on your system, your ducts and where the water line is. If you have one that stopped working, the diagnostic visit is $99.

What humidity should the house be at in winter?

The EPA says keep indoor humidity between 30 and 50 percent. On the coldest nights we run it nearer the low end so windows don’t sweat, and an Aprilaire with an outdoor sensor turns itself down for you.
