Tall rooms are harder to hold
Warm air collects at a vaulted ceiling and dry air gets pulled across the floor below. A whole-home unit moistens the return air, so the whole volume gets the same treatment.

What moves the price is the model and the path to it: a bypass model on an open basement furnace with a water line close by is the simple end, a fan-powered model in a tight closet with a long run for water and a drain is the other.
If the house already has a humidifier that stopped, we look at it first. Often it’s a crusted water panel, a closed saddle valve or a control that lost its wiring, and that’s a repair, not a new unit.
What’s different in Gainesville
Eight in ten owner homes in the Gainesville Census place date from 2000 or later, and the median is 2007. The houses here are built with two-story family rooms, walls of glass and cathedral ceilings. They are tight, so they hold moisture well, but all that glass is the coldest surface in the house, and it is where extra humidity shows up first.
That is why we set a humidifier here by the windows, not by the thermostat. A good unit with an outdoor sensor eases the setting down as the temperature drops, which keeps the glass clear. If you have been wiping the sills every morning, the cause is a setting that is too high, and the fix is a control, not a new unit. Our window condensation guide walks through the numbers.
The furnace side is simple. About 82 percent of owners heat with gas, so a bypass Aprilaire fits most houses. Townhouse and condo buildings, together a bit over a third of homes, often have a single closet system, and an association sometimes has rules about water lines and drains. We ask before we cut anything.
Water here is on the soft side of moderate. Prince William Water reports entry-point hardness from 2.6 to 10.5 grains per gallon, which means a water panel needs a fresh pad each heating season but will not cake over in a month. Plan on changing it every fall, and you will not have to think about it again.

The signs
Warm air collects at a vaulted ceiling and dry air gets pulled across the floor below. A whole-home unit moistens the return air, so the whole volume gets the same treatment.
A zap off every light switch in January means the air in the house is well under 30 percent. Outdoor winter air holds little water, and heating it dries it further.
Wood gives up water in dry air. Gaps between floorboards, a cabinet door that sticks, or a piano that won’t hold its tuning through winter all point the same way.

Choosing who does it
Questions to ask anybody who quotes you one, us included.
The answer should include an outdoor sensor or a clear plan to lower the setting on cold nights. A fixed 40 percent on a 10 degree night is how windows end up dripping.
A humidifier needs a water line and, for most models, a drain. Whoever looks for both before quoting is the one who won’t surprise you on install day.
A bypass model, a fan-powered model and a steam model each suit different systems. Ask why theirs fits your furnace or heat pump, not just what it costs.

Questions
It can, but often one unit on the main system does enough in a tight house. We look at how the ducts connect before suggesting two. Start with the options here.
Once a year is the usual rhythm. Hard water would shorten that; the water here is on the softer end, so most pads last the season.
It’s priced at your house, in writing, because the model and the work depend on your system, your ducts and where the water line is. If you have one that stopped working, the diagnostic visit is $99.
The EPA says keep indoor humidity between 30 and 50 percent. On the coldest nights we run it nearer the low end so windows don’t sweat, and an Aprilaire with an outdoor sensor turns itself down for you.
