What it costs

What drain cleaning costs in Fredericksburg.

Where the clog sits decides the price. A sink, tub or shower drain is one fixture. When every drain in the house is slow or water comes up the lowest one, it’s the main line, and that’s a bigger machine and a longer run.

If the main line clogs again inside a year, or the cable comes back with roots, a camera look for $89 on the same visit tells you whether it’s a clog or a broken pipe. We show you the picture either way.

Comfort+ membership is $199 a year for four visits: a dryer vent cleaning, a water heater flush with a sewer camera inspection, a heating maintenance visit and a cooling maintenance visit.

What’s different in Fredericksburg

Across the river from the city, the 1970s houses and the 2000s ones clog for different reasons.

This end of Stafford is two housing stocks in two ZIP codes. In 22405, the 1970s is the biggest decade, 2,495 of 13,385 homes, with 968 from the 1960s and 943 from the 1950s behind it. In 22406, 6,147 of 10,329 homes, about 60 in 100, went up in 2000 or later. Falmouth, the old village by the river, has half its homes built before 1980. We need to know which one you live in, because the line under a 1970s house is a different job than the one under a 2008 house.

A 1970s house may have a cast iron or clay line under the slab, a tub drain that has been narrowing for fifty years, and a kitchen run that is the first to go. These are the clogs where a cable reopens the pipe and gives you a few good years. We tell you what the cable brought out, grease, roots or scale, because that is the clue to whether it comes back. Roots look like fine hair, grease like candle wax, scale like gravel.

The 2000s houses in 22406 run the other way. They are PVC, with more fixtures on each line, and the 1,670 homes there in buildings of two or more units, plus 1,010 attached houses, share more than a wall. If a townhouse’s lowest drain backs up while the one beside it is fine, the clog is on your branch. If both back up, it is past both. Knowing that before a cable goes in saves a second trip.

The median owner home in 22405 was built in 1993 and in 22406 in 2004. The Stafford side has its own Utilities office, and its line is simple: the owner’s sewer runs to the cleanout, and the County asks you to call Utilities before a plumber. We’ll ask whether you already have, because if the clog is past the cleanout, nothing on our side of it will help.

Which clog it is

One slow drain, or the whole house backing up in Fredericksburg.

Old line or new line, the cable tells you which

What the cable brings back is a diagnosis. Roots, grease and scale are three different fixes. A plumber who hands you the debris, or at least names it, knows the pipe.

A newer house that clogs anyway

New PVC rarely fails, so in a house this young a clog is almost always something that went down: wipes, grease, a toy. One clearing usually ends it.

Only one sink or tub is slow

If the kitchen sink backs up but the bathroom drains fine, the clog is in that branch, usually grease or food in the kitchen, hair and soap in a tub. That’s a one-fixture clearing.

Choosing who clears it

How to pick the best plumber for drain cleaning in Fredericksburg.

Questions to ask anybody who offers to clear a drain, us included.

  1. Do they say what they pulled out?

Roots mean a cracked joint and a camera visit. Grease means a habit. Scale means a pipe near the end of its life. A plumber who names what came out is telling you what to do next.

  2. Do they price it before they run the cable?

You should hear whether it’s a one-drain clearing or the main line, and the price for it, before anybody feeds a cable in. A price that shows up after the work is a bad sign.

  3. Do they push chemicals or a new line on the first visit?

A clear drain doesn’t need a bottle of anything, and a single clog is not a reason to dig. If someone jumps to replacing the sewer line without a camera picture, get a second look.

Plumber showed up on time and fixed my drain clog without issue. Very reasonably priced as well. Highly recommended.

Questions

Drain questions from Fredericksburg.

I live in a 1970s house near Falmouth. Should I worry about the main line?

If it’s cast iron or clay and has never been scoped, a camera, $89 on the same visit, is worth it once. If it shows a clean pipe, you’ve bought years of not wondering. If it shows roots at a joint, you’ve caught it before a backup.

My newer 22406 townhouse backs up in the basement bathroom. Is it me or the neighbors?

Run the water at the lowest fixture and see. If your cable clears it, it was yours. If the neighbors’ drains slow too, the clog is past the cleanout, and the County’s Utilities is the next call.

How much does drain cleaning cost in Fredericksburg?

One clogged sink, tub or shower drain is $200 to $800. A main line backing up into the house is $550 to $1,650. Where the clog is and how far down it sits moves the number inside that range.

Should I pour a drain cleaner in first?

Better not. The strong ones can sit in the trap, damage older pipe, and splash back on whoever opens the drain next. Try a plunger on a sink or tub, and if that doesn’t move it, call.
