Which drain line is yours in a shared building
In a building with several units, the line belongs to the building and the branch belongs to the unit. A plumber who finds where your branch joins the main can tell you whose clog it is.

What it costs
Where the clog sits decides the price. A sink, tub or shower drain is one fixture. When every drain in the house is slow or water comes up the lowest one, it’s the main line, and that’s a bigger machine and a longer run.

If the main line clogs again inside a year, or the cable comes back with roots, a camera look for $89 on the same visit tells you whether it’s a clog or a broken pipe. We show you the picture either way.
Comfort+ membership is $199 a year for four visits: a dryer vent cleaning, a water heater flush with a sewer camera inspection, a heating maintenance visit and a cooling maintenance visit.
What’s different in Quantico
This job starts with a count. The Town has 370 homes, and only 65 are detached houses. Most of the rest are in buildings of two to nineteen units, and 260 of the 310 occupied homes are rented. In a building with several units, one drain line often serves more than one of them. The lowest unit backs up first, whichever branch holds the clog. We ask which floor you are on, and who owns the building, before we ask anything else.
The buildings are old. One hundred of the Town’s homes date from 1939 or earlier, and 113 more from the 1960s. A line from a 1930s building is often cast iron or clay, with joints that roots and decades of scale have found. A cable will open it, but what comes back on the cable is the information: roots, scale or grease. That is also what to give the owner, in writing, when the clog is a building problem and not a tenant’s.
The Town’s water and sewer project is changing the street side of this. Prince William Water takes over ownership, operation and billing, the old mains are being replaced, and every home gets a new meter and a sewer cleanout. The Town’s FAQ says a plumber will be needed to connect each house tied to an old main to the new one. A camera run, $89 on the same visit, shows what a house’s line is made of before it’s joined to new pipe.
If you’re a tenant, Virginia law has the landlord keep the plumbing and sanitary facilities in good and safe working order. Send the owner a note about the slow drain, and keep a copy. If you live in housing aboard the base, that is owned, managed and maintained by Liberty Military Housing, so your request goes to them. We work on the Town’s side, and we won’t cable something that someone else is responsible for.
Which clog it is
In a building with several units, the line belongs to the building and the branch belongs to the unit. A plumber who finds where your branch joins the main can tell you whose clog it is.
If the kitchen sink backs up but the bathroom drains fine, the clog is in that branch, usually grease or food in the kitchen, hair and soap in a tub. That’s a one-fixture clearing.
When the washer drains and water shows up in a basement shower or floor drain, or flushing a toilet bubbles the tub, the clog is past the branches in the main line. Stop running water until it’s cleared.

Choosing who clears it
Questions to ask anybody who offers to clear a drain, us included.
In a shared building, the person who pays for the clog is rarely the person who calls about it. A plumber who asks who approves the work will have the right person sign.
You should hear whether it’s a one-drain clearing or the main line, and the price for it, before anybody feeds a cable in. A price that shows up after the work is a bad sign.
A clear drain doesn’t need a bottle of anything, and a single clog is not a reason to dig. If someone jumps to replacing the sewer line without a camera picture, get a second look.

Plumber showed up on time and fixed my drain clog without issue. Very reasonably priced as well. Highly recommended.

Questions
Usually the owner. Virginia law has the landlord keep the plumbing in good and safe working order. Tell them in writing. If they ask us to come, we send the price to them, and if it was something you put down the drain, we’ll say so plainly.
At the street, yes: the Town says every home gets a new sewer cleanout, and a plumber connects each older house to the new mains. Before your line is joined, a camera tells you what it is made of.
One clogged sink, tub or shower drain is $200 to $800. A main line backing up into the house is $550 to $1,650. Where the clog is and how far down it sits moves the number inside that range.
Better not. The strong ones can sit in the trap, damage older pipe, and splash back on whoever opens the drain next. Try a plunger on a sink or tub, and if that doesn’t move it, call.
Ready when you are
