What a new AC costs in Quantico.

The same price book our estimator runs on, for a central air conditioner on its own, keeping the furnace you have. A single-stage unit on a small house sits near the bottom; a variable-speed one on a big house, near the top.

The HVAC replacement cost estimator narrows it to your house. Then a tech measures, and you get the installed price in writing before anything is ordered.

With Comfort+ membership at $199 a year, the diagnostic visit is included, and half of each repair bill is banked toward replacing that system, up to $1,500.

What’s different in Quantico

Quantico’s AC replacements are the Town’s homes; base housing goes to Liberty.

Two Quanticos share 22134. The Census counts 1,698 homes in the ZIP, 1,321 of them inside Marine Corps Base Quantico, family housing that Liberty Military Housing owns, manages and maintains. A failed air conditioner aboard the base goes to Liberty or the base Family Housing Office, and Prince William County says it doesn’t serve federal property. The Town of Quantico, about 376 homes the base surrounds on land, is where a new AC is ours to price.

Inside the Town, most homes sit in duplexes and small apartment buildings, and each unit usually has its own split system: a furnace or air handler in a closet, a condenser on a pad outside. By a small Census sample, gas heats close to six in ten of the Town’s owner homes, so when a condenser on a gas unit gives out, the new AC and coil go on the furnace already there, one unit at a time.

County address records put at least nine of the 13 homes on 5th Avenue before 1940, and central air reached houses like those decades later, its ducts run wherever they’d fit, often across the attic. A new condenser on a cramped duct path cools no better than the old one did. So the tech measures airflow at the registers before sizing anything, and a house that bakes upstairs may need a better return more than a bigger unit.

River summers pile up running time. The air station 1.6 miles away averages 29.5 days a year at 90 or above, July nights near 70.7 degrees, and a heat index that reached 118 on July 22, 2011. A condenser that rarely gets a cool night to rest racks up hours, and hours are what wear a compressor out. Set the new one where air moves freely around it and clear of limbs: the June 29, 2012 derecho gusted to 66 mph there.

When it’s time

When a new air conditioner makes sense in Quantico.

A compressor that hums, trips the breaker and quits

On an older Town condenser that usually means the compressor is near the end, and out of warranty that repair tips the scale toward replacement, especially on R-22 equipment from before 2010. The $99 diagnostic visit confirms what failed before anybody prices a new AC.

The compressor failed

It’s the pump at the heart of the outdoor unit and its costliest part. Out of warranty on an older unit, the repair can come close to half the price of a new AC, the point where Goodman says replacing may be the better money.

It’s fifteen or older and acting it

The Department of Energy plans on about 18 years for a central air conditioner in Virginia’s climate. Past fifteen, parts get harder to find and each repair buys less time.

Choosing who installs it

How to pick the best AC replacement company in Quantico.

Questions to ask anybody who quotes you, us included.

  1. Did they check that the new coil fits your closet furnace?

In a Town apartment the furnace stands in a closet with the coil stacked on top. A coil matched to a new condenser can stand taller than the old one, so ask whether they measured the closet before quoting; if it won’t fit, the pair at $8,898 to $23,000 may be the honest answer.

  2. Did they size it to your house?

Ask how they picked the size. Copying the old nameplate repeats whatever was guessed when the house was built.

  3. Is the coil inside part of the price?

The outdoor unit and the coil on the furnace are rated as a pair. Ask whether the quote replaces both, and what happens to the line set.

  4. Will they tell you if it’s worth fixing?

A good company puts the repair price next to the replacement range and lets you choose. Already holding somebody’s big number? Take the free second opinion first.

Questions

AC replacement questions from Quantico.

I rent in the Town. Who pays for a new AC?

Usually the owner. Under Virginia’s landlord and tenant law, air conditioning a landlord provides is the landlord’s to keep working, and 260 of the Town’s 310 occupied homes are rented. Report the problem to your landlord; when an owner calls us, the written quote is addressed to the owner.

Is a permit part of a new AC in the Town?

The County’s Building Development Division writes the Town’s trade permits, and a condensing unit traded for its own type on the same pad is ordinary repair on its list. The Town keeps its own zoning approvals, so raise any move of the condenser with both first.

How much does a new AC cost in Quantico?

$5,942 to $14,450 installed for a central air conditioner on its own, keeping the furnace you have; size and efficiency set where yours lands. An AC and furnace together run $8,898 to $23,000. The HVAC replacement cost estimator gives your house its own number.

Should I put in a heat pump instead?

It’s worth pricing. A heat pump cools exactly like an AC and also heats on mild days, so with your gas furnace it becomes dual fuel. A heat pump system runs $8,499 to $21,650 installed, and we’ll price it both ways.
