Plenum Cleaning Before and After: Caked Grey Dust to Bare Metal

Yes, a plenum caked this thick comes clean. These two clips show one plenum box from nearly the same spot, first packed with grey dust and then, later that morning, down to bare galvanized metal.

What you’re seeing in this video

The plenum is the metal box attached to the furnace or air handler, where air either leaves the unit for the trunk lines or comes back to it. In the first clip, every wall of this one is crusted with clumps of grey dust, and a loose layer covers the floor of the box.

The second clip holds nearly the same angle on the same box. The clumps are gone. The walls show the mottled spangle of galvanized steel, the lip along the top is clear, and the floor is bare.

Both clips come from one July morning on the same job, with no people in either one, just the box.

Why it matters in your house

  • Dust this thick in the plenum sits right where all of the system's air passes. Each time the blower kicks on, some of it gets carried along toward the rooms.
  • You can't see a plenum without opening it up, so ask for photos of it by name. A before and after from the same angle, like these two, is the honest way to show it got done.
  • Ask whether a quote includes the plenum. Clean the lines and leave a box like this one behind, and the blower pushes its dust right back into them.

What is a plenum in an HVAC system?

It's the sheet metal box attached to your furnace or air handler. The supply plenum sits where heated or cooled air leaves the unit and splits into the trunk lines. The return plenum is where air comes back in. All of the system's air passes through one and then the other, which is why dust in either one gets around the house.
