Sheet Metal Ductwork After Cleaning: Inside a Clean Plenum and Trunk

Clean sheet metal ductwork looks like this: bare galvanized steel with its crystal pattern showing, seams crisp, and no grey film on the floor of the trunk. Use it as the yardstick for any after photo you're handed.

What you’re seeing in this video

Nobody's in the shot, just a light moving across the inside of a plenum, the sheet metal box on the furnace or air handler that the trunk lines run from. The walls show spangle, the crystal pattern zinc leaves on galvanized steel, and the light bounces straight off it with nothing dulling the shine.

Then the camera tips down the trunk, the main rectangular duct. Its joints read as clean lines, and small bright points at each seam, where the fasteners come through, catch the light all the way to the far end.

This was shot on a July job, 33 minutes after a clip from the same job that caught a duct wall still half covered in dust and dark debris.

Why it matters in your house

  • When you get after photos, look for this: metal you can see, edges you can follow and a trunk floor with nothing gathered on it. A dull grey haze means the job isn't finished.
  • Galvanized sheet metal is smooth and rigid, so dust lets go of it once it's scrubbed. Flexible duct is softer and takes a gentler tool, which is worth asking about if your house has both.
  • If a trunk runs through an unfinished basement, you can see its outside today. Gaps at the seams or tape peeling off are spots where air escapes before it reaches a room.

What is sheet metal ductwork made of?

Most of it is galvanized steel, sheet steel with a zinc coating that keeps it from rusting. That coating is what gives the inside its crystal pattern. Trunks and plenums are usually rectangular, branch runs are often round, and the joints are fastened and sealed with foil tape or mastic so the air stays inside.
