Air Duct Debris on a Duct Wall Caught Halfway Through Cleaning

Debris in air ducts is the house's own dust, lint and grit, settled onto the metal and stuck there. This duct wall was caught partway through cleaning, so the dirty part and the clean part share one panel.

What you’re seeing in this video

A light sweeps across the inside wall of a sheet metal duct. Part of the panel is already pale, bare metal. The rest is still peppered with dark specks of debris, and toward one corner they thicken into a grey smudge where the dust hasn't been touched yet.

Then the camera turns down the trunk, the long main run off the system. A scatter of the same specks dots its walls on the way to the far end.

It's a raw phone clip from a July job, with nobody in the frame. Thirty-three minutes later on the same job, another clip shows the plenum and a trunk down to bright, bare metal.

Why it matters in your house

  • Halfway is the useful view. The difference between the two parts of that wall is what a real cleaning changes, so ask for photos that show both conditions in your own ducts.
  • Specks like these are stuck on, not sitting loose. Getting them off takes a spinning brush or an air whip scrubbing the wall, while a vacuum pulls on the whole system so what comes off leaves the house.
  • Renovations load ducts fast. Drywall sanding with the system running, or a register left uncovered during a remodel, sends that grit straight into the runs.

What is the debris in my air ducts made of?

Mostly the house itself: dust, lint off clothes and bedding, pet hair, grit tracked in on shoes, and drywall dust or sawdust from any project done with the system running. Some of it slips past the filter and some drops in through open registers. It settles on the duct walls and stays put until something scrubs it loose.
