HVAC Trunk Line: Looking Down a Dusty Supply Trunk

The trunk line is the main duct that runs off the plenum and feeds every branch run to the rooms on its side. This clip looks straight down one, with dust on its floor and a sagging canvas connector at the mouth.

What you’re seeing in this video

The camera sits at the mouth of a rectangular supply trunk and looks down its length. Patches of grey dust lie across the metal floor in the foreground, and the side walls inside the trunk carry a dark, even coat.

Around the opening runs a strip of dark canvas, the flexible duct connector. It's the fabric collar between the unit and the sheet metal, there to keep the blower's vibration from traveling into the ductwork. This one has gone slack, and along the top it sags down into the opening.

It was shot on a July job, 41 minutes after another clip from the same job, that one of thick dust packed on a duct elbow.

Why it matters in your house

  • Whatever sits on a trunk floor has every branch run downstream of it. Clean the branches and skip the trunk, and that dust has a short trip back to the rooms.
  • A canvas connector should hold its shape with only a little slack to flex. When it sags or pulls off its metal edge, air leaks out right at the unit, before it reaches a single room.
  • If our camera catches something like this connector on a job, you'll see it in the photos we show you afterward, and what to do about it is your call.

What does the canvas connector on my furnace do?

It's a flexible fabric joint between the furnace or air handler and the sheet metal ductwork. The blower shakes a little when it runs, and the canvas soaks that up so the ducts don't hum or rattle through the house. It should be snug on both edges. Sagging, torn or pulled loose, it leaks air and needs a tech to refasten or replace it.
