How Long Do AC Units Last? A 30-Year-Old Unit Still Running
How long do AC units last? In this climate, most central units get about 12 to 15 years. This Air Temp condenser on red lava rock is still running at 30, a rare survivor.

What you’re seeing in this video
It's a short one. An old Air Temp condenser sits on a bed of red lava rock between the siding and a wooden deck, fan turning, still cooling the house. The voice behind the phone says it plainly: thirty years old and somehow still running.
The cabinet shows its age before anyone reads a label, from the boxy shape to the faded paint. A unit from that era almost certainly runs on R-22, the refrigerant that stopped being produced or imported in the U.S. in 2020.
This AC unit is 30 years old and somehow it's still running.
Why it matters in your house
- Running and running well aren't the same. A unit this old was built to an efficiency floor far below today's, so it can take a lot more power to cool the same rooms.
- If an R-22 system springs a leak, recharging it means buying from a shrinking supply of recycled refrigerant. That's usually the repair that turns into a replacement.
- Past about 15 years, have it inspected each spring. Worn capacitors, contactors and fan motors on an old unit like to fail on the hottest afternoon of the year.
Is it worth repairing a 30-year-old AC unit?
For a small part like a capacitor, sometimes, just to get through the summer. For anything involving the compressor or a refrigerant leak, almost never. A unit that old runs on R-22, uses far more power than a new one and is long out of warranty. Put the repair money toward a plan for a new system.
