Diagnostic visit

$99

The service call: a technician finds the fault and prices the fix in writing before starting it. Included with Comfort+.

Tune-up, per system

$99

The furnace before winter, the AC before summer; heat pumps, boilers and ductless the same. Both are included with Comfort+. About tune-ups.

Heating Check, per system

$67

Through December 31. Burners, igniter, flame sensor and heat exchanger inspected, airflow measured. The Heating Check.

Most repairs

$95 to $2,400

From cleaning a flame sensor to a new blower motor, every brand, written down before the work starts.

Comfort+ membership

$199 a year

The fall and spring visits, the diagnostic included and 15% off any service.

A new system, installed

$8,898 to $23,000

or $148/mo at 0% APR for 60 months

Furnace and AC together, when a repair stops making sense. HVAC replacement.

Monthly figures: 60mo @ 0% APR on each starting price, the whole price financed, on approved credit. Longer plans lower the payment and cost more in total. The lender sets the final terms. How financing works

Every kind of visit, priced and explained: what HVAC service costs, and this month’s deals on the offers page.

Holding someone else’s quote? Our free second opinion: a technician looks at the system you were quoted on and tells you what it actually needs.

How the call goes

How an HVAC service
call goes, start to finish

Often same-day, and we will tell you honestly when we can get there. We run 24/7 emergency service.

  1. 1

    You call, a person answers

Day or night. Tell us what it’s doing and we set up the visit.

  2. 2

    Diagnosis, $99

The technician checks the whole system, not just the part you noticed: the equipment, the thermostat, the filter, the drain and the electrical.

  3. 3

    The price, in writing

Before anything is replaced. Approve it or don’t, and if a repair isn’t worth making on an old system, you hear that too.

  4. 4

    Fixed and tested

The repair, then a full run, so you know it holds before we leave.

Tune-ups

What a tune-up does,
and how often you need one

Twice a year: the heat in the fall, the cooling in the spring. One tune-up covers one system.

  • Heating, every fall. On a gas furnace the burners, igniter, flame sensor and heat exchanger; on a heat pump the defrost and the backup heat; on both the electrical, the thermostat, and the airflow and temperature rise, measured.
  • Cooling, every spring. The outdoor coil rinsed, the refrigerant pressures read, the capacitor and contactor tested, the drain line cleared.
  • $99 a system. Heat pumps, boilers and ductless mini splits too, same price, and both seasonal visits are included with Comfort+. Book a tune-up.
  • Want the whole list? The HVAC service checklist goes through a visit line by line, so you can hold any technician to it.

This time of year

Heating service before
the first hard freeze

Late fall is when a furnace that limped through last winter quits for good.

  • The Heating Check, $67 per system, through December 31: burners, igniter, flame sensor and heat exchanger inspected, electrical tested, airflow and temperature rise measured, and photos of anything we flag, in writing, before we leave. The Heating Check.
  • No heat right now? Check the thermostat’s mode and batteries, the breaker, the switch on the furnace itself and the filter. Still nothing? Call us; that’s what 24/7 emergency service is for. Emergency HVAC service, step by step.
  • Blowing cold air in heat mode? On a gas furnace it’s often the flame sensor ($95 to $180) or the igniter ($240 to $410). Why it happens.
  • Smell gas? Leave the house, then call Washington Gas or 911 from outside. Don’t flip a switch on the way out.

HVAC service plan

Comfort+: both seasonal
visits for one price a year

  • $199 a year. A heating maintenance visit every fall and a cooling maintenance visit every spring.
  • The diagnostic visit is included when something breaks between visits, and 15% comes off any service.
  • Half of each repair bill is banked toward replacing that system, up to $1,500.
  • Two more visits in the same year: a dryer vent cleaning, and a water heater flush with a sewer camera inspection. How Comfort+ works.

When to call

Six reasons people call us
for HVAC service

What people describe on the phone, and what it usually turns out to be. A technician confirms it.

The house won’t heat

Check the thermostat, the breaker, the furnace switch and the filter first.

Still cold? Most no-heat calls end in an igniter, a flame sensor or a control board. Heating repair, explained.

Cold air from the vents in heat mode

On a heat pump, a few minutes of it on a frosty morning is defrost, and that’s normal.

An hour of it isn’t. Heat pump repair.

The AC runs but won’t cool

A frozen coil, a dirty outdoor coil, a failed capacitor or low refrigerant, in about that order.

A run capacitor runs $240 to $370. AC repair.

Water around the furnace or air handler

Almost always the condensate drain: the line clogs and the pan overflows.

Clearing it, with a trap and a float switch added, runs $175 to $420.

It turns on and off every few minutes

A dirty flame sensor, a thermostat in the wrong spot, or a system too big for the house.

A flame sensor cleaned runs $95 to $180; a thermostat replaced, $300 to $640.

A new noise or a burning smell

A dusty smell the first time the heat runs each fall is dust burning off, and it fades.

A hot electrical smell, a squeal or a grind isn’t: turn the system off at the thermostat and call.

We had SwiftPro come out for a checkup on our furnace. They gave it a thorough check and thankfully it was in good shape. We also asked about replacing an existing inefficient humidifier on the furnace and they proposed a better solution.…

Asked on the phone

HVAC service questions,
answered straight

How much does an HVAC service call cost in Northern Virginia?

The diagnostic visit is $99: a technician finds the fault and prices the fix in writing before starting it. Most repairs we price run $95 to $2,400, from a flame sensor cleaned ($95 to $180) to a blower motor ($670 to $2,400). Comfort+ members get the diagnostic visit included.

How much is an HVAC tune-up?

$99 per system. One tune-up covers one furnace, heat pump, air conditioner, boiler or ductless system, so a house with a furnace and an AC books one each season. Comfort+ members get both seasonal visits included.

How often should HVAC be serviced?

Twice a year in a house with heat and air: the heating in the fall, the cooling in the spring. A heat pump does both jobs, so it gets both visits. That is the schedule ENERGY STAR recommends too.

What’s included in HVAC service?

On a heating visit: burners, igniter, flame sensor and heat exchanger on a gas furnace, the defrost and backup heat on a heat pump, the electrical, the thermostat, and the airflow and temperature rise measured. On a cooling visit: the outdoor coil, the refrigerant pressures, the capacitor and contactor, and the drain line. Anything we flag is photographed and written down. The full checklist.

Do you have 24/7 emergency service for heating and AC?

Yes. We run 24/7 emergency service. Often same-day, and we will tell you honestly when we can get there. If you smell gas, leave the house first and call Washington Gas or 911 from outside, then call us.

Do you service every brand?

Yes: Trane, Carrier, Rheem, Lennox, Goodman, American Standard and the rest, gas and propane furnaces, heat pumps, air conditioners, hot water boilers and ductless mini splits. Brands we work on.

Do you have an HVAC service plan?

Comfort+ is $199 a year: a heating maintenance visit every fall, a cooling maintenance visit every spring, the diagnostic visit included, 15% off any service, and half of each repair bill banked toward replacing that system, up to $1,500. It also covers a dryer vent cleaning and a water heater flush with a sewer camera inspection.

Should I repair or replace my HVAC system?

Repair a young system. Past 15 years, on R-22, or facing a refrigerant leak or a failed compressor, put the repair price next to a new system’s: furnace and AC together run $8,898 to $23,000 installed. We’ll price both and say which we’d pick. From about $148 a month at 0% APR for 60 months, the whole price financed, on approved credit. How financing works

Do you do commercial HVAC service?

Yes, for offices, restaurants, churches and rental properties. Commercial HVAC.

What areas do you serve?

Fairfax, Arlington, Loudoun, Prince William, Fauquier and Stafford counties, out of our shop in Chantilly and our office in Ashburn.
