Summer: counterclockwise, so you feel air on your skin when you stand under it. Winter: clockwise, on the lowest speed, so you don’t. That’s the whole answer. The switch is on the motor housing above the blades, or a reverse button on the remote.
Now the questions that follow, because they’re the ones people actually type into Google: does reversing it really do anything, how much money is this worth, and why does the winter setting seem to help in one room and not another.
Which way should ceiling fans turn in the summer, and why
Stand under the fan and look up. Counterclockwise means the leading edge of each blade is angled down and the fan is pushing air onto you. Moving air pulls heat off your skin, which is the same reason a breeze outside feels good. The Department of Energy calls it wind chill, and it’s why they say fans cool people, not rooms.
That one sentence has a dollar figure attached. The DOE’s own guidance is that a ceiling fan lets you raise the air conditioner thermostat about four degrees with no loss of comfort. Dominion Energy puts the fan-plus-thermostat combination at up to 14 percent off cooling costs over a season, and recommends 78. In a Northern Virginia July, when the air conditioner is most of the electric bill, four degrees is real money.
The flip side of “fans cool people” is that a fan spinning in an empty room is spinning the meter. Turn it off when you leave.
One thing a fan will never do here is dry the air out. August in Fairfax or Loudoun is wet, and a fan moving wet air around is still wet air. If the house feels clammy at 76, that’s an air conditioner problem, not a fan problem. Here’s where to set it and why.
Does reversing a ceiling fan in winter really work?
Yes, with a caveat that nobody on the internet seems willing to say out loud.
Warm air rises. In a heated room, the warmest air in the house is pressed against the ceiling doing nothing for anyone. Run the fan clockwise on low and it pulls air up through the center, pushes it across the ceiling and sends it down the walls. ENERGY STAR describes it as a gentle updraft that redistributes warm air near the ceiling back into the living space. Low speed is the entire trick. On high you’ve just built a cold draft, and a cold draft in January is worse than no fan at all.
The caveat: in a room with a flat eight foot ceiling, the difference is small, because the warm air was never far away. The DOE’s Building America program says fans work best mounted seven to nine feet off the floor, which in a standard room means the blades are already sitting in the warm layer. Where the winter setting genuinely earns its keep:
- Vaulted and two story rooms. A family room open to the second floor can be ten degrees warmer at the peak than at the couch. The fan is the cheapest fix for that room there is, and Hunter, who makes a lot of these fans, says the same.
- Houses heated by a heat pump. Heat pumps are everywhere in Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince William, and the air they deliver is warm rather than hot, roughly 90 to 110 degrees at the register against about 125 from a gas furnace. That warm-not-hot air pools at the ceiling easily. Mixing it back down is often the difference between “the heat pump doesn’t keep up” and a house that feels fine. - A room with one cold corner. If the far end is always cold, the fan evens it out faster than another thermostat argument will.
So “reverse your fan in winter” isn’t a myth. It’s advice worth a lot in a third of the rooms in Northern Virginia and worth very little in the rest. Run it for a day. If you can’t feel the difference, that room is one of the rest, and you can leave the switch where it was.
How to tell which way it’s going
Turn it on, stand directly under it, look up. Counterclockwise is summer. If you can’t tell, hold a hand up: in summer mode you feel air on your palm, in winter mode you feel nothing under it and a slight movement near the walls. Some fans are wired backwards from the factory, so trust your hand over the label.
Pull chain fan with a slide switch: turn it off, wait for the blades to stop completely, slide the switch, turn it back on. Sliding it while it’s moving is hard on the motor. Remote: there’s a reverse button, sometimes hidden behind “hold the fan button for three seconds.” App: it’s in settings, called Winter Mode or Reverse depending on the brand.
When the fan isn’t the fix
A fan is not heating or cooling equipment, and there are three situations where people keep flipping the switch when the problem is somewhere else.
The same room is wrong in both seasons. That’s airflow, not air mixing. A closed or broken damper, a crushed flex duct in the attic, a return that’s too small. Here’s the list, in order of how often each one turns out to be it.
Upstairs is hot in summer no matter what. The fan helps you sleep. It does not change the fact that the system is fighting a 130 degree attic with ducts running through it. That’s an insulation and duct conversation, and it’s one we have a lot in older colonials around here.
The system runs all day and never gets there. A fan adds comfort, not capacity. If the air conditioner or heat pump can’t hold the setpoint on an ordinary day, something is wrong with it or it’s sized wrong for the house. That’s a service call, and September is a much better month to make it than the next heat wave.
