Signs your dryer vent is clogged

The lint screen catches most of it. The rest goes down the line a little every load and packs in at the bends and at the hood outside. You notice it here first:

  • Towels need a second cycle.
  • The top of the dryer is hot to the touch.
  • The laundry room gets hot while it runs.
  • The dryer shuts itself off partway through.
  • Lint behind the dryer, or around the flap outside.
  • The flap outside doesn’t open when the dryer runs.
  • A faint burning smell.

Two or more of these and your dryer vent is due for cleaning, whatever the calendar says.

Dryer vent fires happen here, not just on the news

Lint burns like paper. When it packs into the dryer vent, the hot air has nowhere to go and the dryer keeps heating anyway. These three fires were traced to the dryer by the fire department, all in Northern Virginia:

  • DumfriesNovember 2025

Lint built up in the dryer vent caught fire at the back of a house. The home was declared unsafe and five adults had to move out. The Prince William fire marshal’s advice afterwards: have the dryer vent professionally cleaned once a year.

  • Wolf TrapMarch 2021

The family heard a pop and saw flames behind the dryer. Fairfax County Fire and Rescue traced it to lint in the dryer duct and put the damage at about ninety thousand dollars.

Nobody was hurt in any of the three. Every one of them started in the dryer vent.

How to keep a dryer fire from starting

  • Clean the lint screen every load, and never run the dryer without it.
  • Turn the dryer off when you leave the house or go to bed.
  • Use a metal hose behind the dryer, not foil or plastic.
  • Check that the flap outside opens when the dryer runs.
  • Keep laundry, boxes and cleaning supplies clear of the dryer.
  • Have the whole dryer vent line cleaned once a year.

What a dryer vent cleaning includes

The whole dryer vent run, not just the part you can reach. We run a rotary brush and a vacuum together, so the lint comes out of the house instead of getting pushed further down the pipe.

A dryer in a laundry room. A hose behind it (point 3) connects to the dryer vent pipe, which runs up inside the wall and across the ceiling (point 2) to a hood on the outside wall (point 4), where airflow is measured with the dryer running (point 1). Lint collects at the two bends and at the hood. LAUNDRY ROOM OUTSIDE 1 2 3 4
Grey is where lint piles up: at the bends, and at the hood outside.
  1. Airflow, measured

At the outside hood with the dryer running. Weak flow means a clogged line.

  2. The full line

Brushed and vacuumed from the back of the dryer to the outside wall.

  3. The hose behind the dryer

Checked for crushing, kinks, and foil or plastic that should be metal.

  4. The outside hood

The flap opens freely, closes fully, and stays clear of lint and nests.

  5. Photos and paperwork

Before and after photos of your line, and a dated invoice if your association asks for one.

Under an hour in most homes. You get a window when you book, and your tech texts when they’re on the way.

What we fix while we’re there

Cleaning is the job. These turn up once the line is open, and every one of them has come up on a real visit:

  • A joint that has come apart inside the wall
  • A crushed or foil hose, swapped for metal
  • An old bird nest, pulled out of the line
  • A guard on the hood so the birds stay out
  • A torn run, replaced

Anything past the cleaning, you get the price first and it’s your call.

On the Family Care Plan

$199 a year, or $20 a month. Dryer vent cleaning every year, plus a heating inspection, an AC inspection and a whole-home plumbing inspection.

If you’d have your dryer vent cleaned every year anyway, the plan costs less than one dryer vent cleaning on its own.

Booking air duct cleaning too? Dryer vent cleaning rides along for $199. See air duct cleaning prices.

Family Care Plan

Put the dryer vent on our calendar, not yours

Nobody skips dryer vent cleaning on purpose. It just never comes up until the towels need two cycles.

On the Family Care Plan we do your dryer vent cleaning every year and tell you when it’s due. The same $199 a year covers a heating inspection in the fall, an AC inspection in the summer and a whole-home plumbing inspection, and any repair in between is 15% off.

Pay for the year, or $20 a month, month to month. Most people start with the dryer vent cleaning.

Dryer vent cleaning on its own is $299. The plan is $199 and covers the dryer vent cleaning every year, so you’re $100 ahead before we inspect anything else.

Neighbors who put it on the plan

Swift Pro just performed a vent cleaning at my 50 year old house that has never had a vent cleaning. Very satisfied with price and service, the technician Aaron was polite, professional, punctual and answered all of my questions without making me feel like a dummy. I was so pleased with the service that I signed up for the Swift Pro membership. Highly recommend Swift Pro for all of you HVAC needs. I do not have any plumbing problems but they will definitely be my first call if one arises.

How often to clean a dryer vent

Once a year. Fairfax County Fire and Rescue’s advice is to clean the lint out of the dryer vent pipe once a year, or more often if clothes are taking longer than normal to dry, “or have a dryer lint removal service do it for you.” That second part is us.

  • 13,820home fires a year involved a dryerNational Fire Protection Association, between 2014 and 2018
  • 32%of them came down to failure to cleanMore than any other single cause
  • Once a yearis how often your dryer vent needs cleaningFairfax County Fire and Rescue

If your HOA asks for it. Some Northern Virginia HOAs ask for a yearly dryer vent cleaning and a receipt. Check yours. You get a dated invoice and before and after photos to send the association or your property manager.

Gas dryer? Its exhaust leaves through the same pipe. If the line has a hole or a joint has come apart, that exhaust ends up in the room. Keep a carbon monoxide alarm nearby, and we check the whole line when we clean it.

Townhouse, condo and high dryer vents

In a lot of townhouses and newer homes the laundry is upstairs or in the middle of the house, so the line runs a long way through a ceiling or a wall before it reaches the outside. Every extra bend is another place for lint to settle.

If your hood is two or three stories up, tell us when you book so the tech shows up with the right ladder. One of our customers put it better than we could:

In a condo, the dryer vent can belong to the building. Ask your association first: some clean the whole building at once, and then you’re already on the list.

I highly recommend identifying the height of your outside vents to make sure they come prepared with the right equipment and ladders. Luckily, Aaron was able to bring the proper ladder as our vents are very high up.

Dryer vent cleaning reviews from neighbors

Word for word, from our Google reviews.

I was trying to dry my clothes, but my dryer just would not work. I believed that the heat trip was being activated, so I tried cleaning the vent myself. Well, I couldn’t get deep enough, so I had to call some professionals. They came as soon as they could, and cleaned out my dryer vent. Turned out that there was TONS of like solid dust chunks in there that was just completely blocking airflow. After that, my dryer worked fine.

I had Swiftpro clean my dryer vent from point to point as well another vent that was blocked with an old bird nest. Friendly customer support. Prompt tech. Highly recommend.

Moises and SwiftPro were excellent. They cleaned my dryer duct and repaired an area that had become disconnected and was therefore posing a fire hazard. Moises was punctual, friendly, and even went the extra mile to help me briefly with another small household project.

Dryer vent cleaning questions

How much does dryer vent cleaning cost in Northern Virginia?
$299 booked on its own. $199 if you add it to a duct cleaning, which saves you $100. It’s included every year on the Family Care Plan, which is $199 a year or $20 a month.
How often should a dryer vent be cleaned?
Once a year. That’s Fairfax County Fire and Rescue’s advice for every homeowner, and more often if clothes start taking longer than normal to dry.
How long does a dryer vent cleaning take?
Under an hour in most homes. Long runs and high hoods take a little longer, so tell us about yours when you book.
Do I have to join a plan to get my dryer vent cleaned?
No. Dryer vent cleaning is $299 on its own, booked like any other visit. The plan is there if you’d rather have it done every year without keeping track: $199 a year covers the dryer vent cleaning every year plus three inspections, and we tell you when each one is due.
Can I pay for the Family Care Plan monthly?
Yes. $20 a month for one heating and cooling system, $25 for two and $30 for three, month to month. Or $199, $259 or $319 for the year.
Can I clean my dryer vent myself?
The lint screen, yes, every load. The hose behind the dryer, yes, if you can pull the dryer out. The run inside the wall is the hard part: a brush pushed in from one end tends to pack the lint further down, which is why we run a rotary brush and a vacuum together from end to end.
My dryer isn’t drying clothes. Is it the dryer vent?
Often, yes. When the dryer vent is packed, the damp air has nowhere to go, so clothes come out wet and the dryer runs hot. Go outside while it runs: if the flap barely moves, it’s the dryer vent. If air is blowing out hard and the clothes are still wet, it’s more likely the dryer itself, and that’s a job for an appliance repair shop, not us.
There’s a burning smell when the dryer runs. What should I do?
Turn it off and don’t run another load until the dryer vent has been checked. Lint that builds up where the hot air leaves the dryer can scorch, and that’s often the smell. If you see smoke, get out and call 911. Otherwise call us and we’ll clean the dryer vent and check the hose.
Do you repair or replace dryer vents?
Yes. A crushed or foil hose, a joint that has come apart inside the wall, a broken hood or a torn run: we find it while we clean, you get the price first, and it’s your call.
Do you remove bird nests from dryer vents?
Yes. We pull the nest, clean the line, and can put a guard on the hood so they don’t move back in.
My HOA wants proof of a yearly dryer vent cleaning. What do I get?
A dated invoice and before and after photos of your line. Tell us how the association wants it addressed and we’ll put it on the paperwork.
Do you clean dryer vents in townhouses and condos?
Yes, including long runs and hoods two or three stories up. Tell us how high the hood is when you book. In a condo, check with your association first, because the dryer vent may belong to the building.
Can a clogged dryer vent start a fire?
Yes. The National Fire Protection Association counted 13,820 home fires a year involving a dryer between 2014 and 2018, and failure to clean caused 32 percent of them, more than any other single cause.
Have there been dryer vent fires in Northern Virginia?
Yes. In 2025 the Prince William fire marshal traced two Dumfries house fires to the dryer vent, one in April and one in November, and fifteen people had to leave their homes. In 2021 Fairfax County Fire and Rescue traced a Wolf Trap house fire to lint in the dryer duct.
Can you clean the dryer vent and the air ducts on the same visit?
Yes, and dryer vent cleaning drops to $199 when it rides along with an air duct cleaning. The duct prices are on our air duct cleaning page.
Do you clean dryer vents in my town?
If you’re in Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William or Arlington County, almost certainly. Call (703) 997-9757 and ask rather than assuming.
