Haymarket was a town of 230 people in 1980, so most of its sewer lines are plastic.
The Town of Haymarket counted 230 residents in 1980 and 1,782 by 2010, by its own hazard plan’s figures. Close to six in ten of the Town’s homes went up in the 1980s and 90s, median 1995, and a sewer line from those years is usually plastic out to the cleanout. At thirty or so, it’s old enough for the ground around it to have moved.
Across all of 20169 the median owner home dates from 2006, and close to eight in ten homes went up in 2000 or later, Dominion Valley and Piedmont among them. Prince William Water’s standards now have the utility run its own camera down each new service connection, property line to building, before accepting it. If yours got that look when the house was new, it may be the last anyone took. Twenty years on, the faults to rule out are the ones the utility screens its own mains for: a sag, a rolled joint, pipe pressed out of round.
The same standards keep a new lateral at least five feet from a tree where possible, but a shade tree planted after closing has no idea where the pipe runs, and twenty years of growth can carry its roots to a joint that has let go.
Bull Run Mountain Estates is the older end of the ZIP: about six in ten of its houses were built before 1980, most in the 1970s. A line from that decade can be cast iron, early plastic or, on the first of them, Orangeburg, pressed paper and tar that slumps with age. Prince William County’s sewer plan names two ways a house is served, public sewer or a septic system on the lot, and a mountain house can be on either. On septic we run the camera from the house to the tank; the tank is a septic contractor’s job, since SwiftPro does no septic work.

Census figures for the owner-occupied homes in each place, and the sewer pipe houses that age usually have.
| Place | Median home built | Most homes are | Heated with | The sewer line you usually find |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bull Run Mountain Estates | 1978 | single-family houses, nearly all | electricity, about 4 in 10 | Cast iron or clay to the street, with joints roots can get into. |
| Haymarket | 1995 | single-family houses, about 6 in 10 | gas, about 6 in 10 | PVC to the street, mostly; a settled trench can leave a sag. |

- Newer houses run PVC throughout, so a camera here is checking the grade and the joints, not the pipe wall.
What a sewer camera inspection costs in Haymarket.
Why we’re at the house decides which price you pay. On its own, the line often has to be cleared before the camera can see anything, and that’s what moves the number.
- Sewer camera inspection, added to a visit$89
- Sewer camera inspection on its own$500 to $1,700
A locator on the camera head marks the spot and its depth on the ground, so if something needs fixing you know where. If the line is fine, nobody talks about digging.
Comfort+ membership is $199 a year for four visits: a dryer vent cleaning, a water heater flush with a sewer camera inspection, a heating maintenance visit and a cooling maintenance visit.
When to put a camera down the line in Haymarket.
The drains slowed after the yard work
A new fence, a deck or a sprinkler system means digging, and a plastic sewer line a couple of feet down is easy to hit. If the main line started acting up after the work, say so when you book; the camera shows whether the pipe was broken.
Big trees in the front yard
Roots don’t break a sewer line. They find a crack or a loose joint that’s already there and grow into it, which is why a line under old trees is worth a look before it slows down.
A newer house nobody has looked under
Plastic pipe doesn’t rust, but the trench it was laid in can settle and leave a sag that holds water and paper. If the line has never had a camera in it, nobody knows.
How to pick the best plumber for a sewer camera inspection in Haymarket.
Questions to ask anybody who offers to put a camera down your line, us included.
Will they tell you if a repair needs Prince William Water’s permit?
Any repair or replacement of the lateral outside the house needs the utility’s own Lateral Repair or Replacement Permit and its inspection. Ask whether the quote counts both.
Will they show you what the camera finds?
Ask to see it and to keep a copy. “It’s roots” with nothing to show for it is a guess, and a guess is a bad reason to dig up a yard.
Do they line and dig, or only one?
A company that only digs tends to see a dig, and one that only lines tends to see a liner. We do both, so the footage decides, not the truck.

Sewer camera questions from Haymarket.
Does the Town of Haymarket run its own sewer?
No. The Town lists Prince William Water for water and sewer, so inside the town limits the utility’s rules are the same as anywhere else it serves, lateral permit and inspection included.
Where is the cleanout on a Haymarket house?
Usually near the property line: a capped pipe, often in the front yard, which Prince William Water calls the access point for inspecting and clearing the line. If the cap is missing, the utility replaces it as a courtesy. The camera usually goes in right there.
How much does a sewer camera inspection cost in Haymarket?
$89 added to a visit we’re already making, $500 to $1,700 booked on its own. The difference is clearing: a visit just for the camera often has to clear the line first.
Should I get a sewer camera inspection before I buy a house?
If the house is older or has big trees out front, yes. A standard home inspection usually doesn’t include one, and in most of Northern Virginia the line from the house toward the street is the owner’s to fix.
