What’s different in Round Hill

Round Hill heat pumps put in more hours in January than in July.

More than a century ago Round Hill drew summer visitors getting away from Washington’s heat, by the state historic register’s account. It still gets hot. NOAA’s 1991 to 2020 normals for the weather station in Purcellville, three miles east, put the July high near 86 degrees, with about 30 days a year at 90 or above, and on July 28, 2023, stations across western Loudoun read heat indices past 110.

Even so, the outdoor unit here works hardest in winter. The Census counts 53 percent of owner homes in 20141 heating with electricity, usually through heat pumps, and the Purcellville station logs 4,942 heating degree days a year to roughly 1,050 cooling ones. A heat pump’s run capacitor works every hour the compressor does, winter included, so it ages faster than one on a plain air conditioner; replacing it runs $240 to $370.

On June 16, 2016, winds near 61 knots uprooted big trees along New Cut Road, Bell Road and Main Street, and quarter-size hail fell in Round Hill on July 25, 2023. Hail folds the coil’s thin fins flat, and a coil that can’t breathe runs hot until a part gives out. After a storm, look for limbs in the fan grille, a cabinet pushed off level, fins flattened on the windward side. If floodwater reached it, leave the breaker off and call us; we’ll check it all before it runs again.

Inside the town limits most houses went up before the end of the 1920s, the Town’s plan says, so any cooling there came later, often an air handler tucked into the attic. Across 20141, about four owners in ten heat with propane, and in those houses the air conditioner usually borrows the propane furnace’s blower. A dusty blower wheel costs you in both seasons; pulling it and cleaning it runs $300 to $440.

Round Hill

ZIP 20141 as a whole: every Round Hill address, the Town and the neighborhoods around it. The Census place for the Town alone has too few homes for steady figures.

  • Median home built2004 Census
  • Built before 1980about 2 in 10 Census
  • Built since 2000about 6 in 10 Census
  • Most homes aresingle-family houses, about 9 in 10 Census
  • Heated withelectricity, about 5 in 10 Census
  • Rentedabout 1 in 10 Census
  • Electric heat here usually means a heat pump, so the outdoor unit works all year and an AC problem is often a heating problem waiting for January.
  • A lot of original systems here are 15 to 25 years old; before 2010 most ran R-22, which is no longer made.

What you’d notice

What a failing AC in Round Hill usually does.

A stain spreading on the top floor ceiling

Under an attic air handler, that’s usually condensate spilling over its pan because the drain line is clogged. Turn the cooling off and call. Clearing the drain line runs $175 to $420; a pan rusted through is a bigger repair, priced before it’s done.

The heat pump is icing up in summer

Ice on the outdoor lines in July means low refrigerant or starved airflow. Shut it off to thaw and call; running it iced can take out the compressor.

It’s the original system

A house from the 2000s often still has its first air conditioner. Anything installed before 2010 usually runs R-22, which hasn’t been made since 2020, so a leak on one is a repair-or-replace question.

Choosing who fixes it

How to pick the best AC repair company in Round Hill.

Questions worth asking anybody who comes out, us included.

  1. Do they publish prices?

A company that prints what a capacitor or a contactor costs has already told you the number. One that won’t say until the tech is in your driveway hasn’t.

  2. Do they measure before they sell refrigerant?

A healthy system drops the air somewhere around 16 to 22 degrees across the indoor coil. Low refrigerant means a leak, and topping it up every summer is the expensive way to find that out.

  3. Will they tell you when it’s the end of the road?

Some repairs aren’t worth doing on a 20-year-old system. The good answer shows you the repair price and the replacement price side by side and lets you pick.

Questions

AC repair questions from Round Hill.

Should I cover my outdoor unit for the winter?

Not a heat pump: it heats all winter and needs air moving through it. The January 2016 blizzard left 36.3 inches just west of town, by a spotter’s measure, enough to bury a unit on a low pad. After a big snow, shovel a ring around it. A plain air conditioner can take a board on top; wrapping the sides traps moisture.

The power flickered in a storm and now the AC won’t start. What do I check?

Check the outdoor unit’s breaker. Reset a tripped one once; if it trips again, leave it off and call. Some thermostats hold the compressor off for a few minutes after power returns, so give it five. Still silent? A surge may have taken a capacitor or a control board, and the $99 diagnostic visit tells you which.

How much does AC repair cost in Round Hill?

The diagnostic visit is $99. The common repairs: a run capacitor $240 to $370, a contactor $290 to $425, a condensate drain cleared $175 to $420, refrigerant topped up $190 to $740. A refrigerant leak repair runs $1,850 to $2,700.

Should I repair it or replace it?

Fix the cheap parts on almost anything. Think twice about a big repair on a system over 15 years old, and about any leak on an R-22 system. The HVAC estimator prices a new system in about a minute, so you can put the two numbers side by side.
