What’s different in Purcellville

Purcellville’s ducts carry heat pump air all year, and the bigger houses outside town often have two systems.

About half the homeowners inside the Town of Purcellville heat with electricity, usually a heat pump, and a heat pump pushes air through the ductwork in every month that needs heating or cooling. There’s no long spring or fall pause with the blower sitting idle, so whatever gathers in the returns gathers on a year-round schedule. In a house heated by a propane furnace, the furnace and the air conditioner share one blower and one set of ducts the same way.

The town’s median owner home went up in 2001, and about half of all its homes were built after 2000, so the usual system is the one the builder left: flexible runs through the attic or the basement ceiling, a trunk off the air handler, and one large return in a hallway. Twenty-five years of filter changes, a few of them late, shows at that return first. About one home in five in town is a townhouse, where the air handler often sits in a closet or the attic with short runs to each room.

The old houses around the downtown grid predate central air. About seven homes in a hundred in town were built before 1940, and in houses like those the ductwork came decades later and went wherever it could fit, up through closets and into attic spaces. The camera photos are how we learn what’s actually there before we quote, and some of those houses cool with ductless heads and have little ductwork worth cleaning.

Outside the town limits, on the county side of 20132, nearly every home is a detached house and plenty are big ones on a few acres, so a second system, one for the main floor and one up top, is common, and each is its own cleaning. Close to three in ten of those homes went up before 1980, and in an old farmhouse the cooling may run on its own attic air handler, separate from the furnace downstairs. The dryer vent cleaning can ride along on the same visit for $199.

What it costs

What duct cleaning costs in Purcellville.

The same price book as our air duct cleaning page, for a home up to 2,000 square feet on one system. We look first: the tech takes a cover off, puts a camera in and photographs what’s in your ducts, then shows you, so you see their current condition before you decide. No charge, including when yours are fine. Then you get the price in writing, then we clean.

  • Return Air Duct Cleaning$298
  • Whole Home Air Duct Cleaning$598, regularly $798
  • Whole Home Air Duct Cleaning with ActivePure Air Scrubber$1,798
  • Dryer Vent Cleaning, on its own$298
  • Dryer Vent Cleaning, added to a duct cleaning$199

A second system bills at 90 percent of the tier, because it’s isolated and cleaned on its own. The calculator on our air duct cleaning page does the arithmetic for a bigger house.

The dryer vent cleaning is the yearly one, and it’s in Comfort+ membership at $199 a year along with a water heater flush with a sewer camera inspection, a heating maintenance visit and a cooling maintenance visit.

When it’s worth doing

When duct cleaning is worth it in Purcellville.

The heat pump never gets a day off

In a Purcellville house heated by a heat pump the same blower and the same ducts heat in January and cool in July. If the returns are furred over, that’s twelve months of air passing them, and the camera photos show it plainly.

The house is new to you, not new

A 2005 house has had twenty years of filter changes, some of them missed, and the system may have run while the drywall went up. Nobody has looked inside since.

You just bought the place

You don’t know whether the last owners had three cats or ever took a register cover off. Most new owners want it done once, early, so they know what they’re starting with.

The dryer vent, locally

What the county says about dryer vents.

Loudoun County

Ashburn Volunteer Fire and Rescue, one of the companies in Loudoun County’s fire and rescue system, says the dryer vent, from the back of the dryer to the outside of the house, should be cleaned at least once a year, and that longer drying times are a sign it’s clogged. Source.

Questions to ask anybody who quotes you, us included.

  1. Do they count every air handler before quoting?

On the bigger houses outside town, a second unit in the attic or over the garage is easy to miss from the front hall. Have them walk the house and name each system in the written price.

  2. Do they look before they quote?

Ask whether they’ll put a camera in and show you photos of what’s inside first. A price given at the door, sight unseen, is a price for the average house, not yours.

  3. Do they clean the returns, or only the supply vents?

The returns are the big grilles that pull air back to the system, and they’re the side that collects dust. A job that only counts supply registers leaves half the system alone.

  4. Is the price for the whole system, in writing?

Ask what it covers: every supply and return, the main trunk, the blower compartment. The $59 mailbox coupon covers getting somebody into the attic.

What our customers say.

★★★★★
Moises and SwiftPro were excellent. They cleaned my dryer duct and repaired an area that had become disconnected and was therefore posing a fire hazard. Moises was punctual, friendly, and even went the extra mile to help me briefly with another small household project.

Questions

Duct cleaning questions from Purcellville.

Does an old house near Main Street even have ducts?

Often, though they were added later. A house built before central air may have had ducts run through closets and attic spaces long after it went up, or it may cool with ductless heads and have nothing to clean. We look first, and if there’s no ductwork worth cleaning, you’ll hear that before any price.

Do you clean ducts on the farm properties outside town?

Yes, anywhere in 20132, and the prices don’t change at the town line. Tell us how many systems the house has and where the air handlers sit, attic, basement or over the garage, so the right ladders come along.

How much does air duct cleaning cost in Purcellville?

$598 for Whole Home Air Duct Cleaning, regularly $798, on a home up to 2,000 square feet with one system, $298 for Return Air Duct Cleaning, and $1,798 with an ActivePure air scrubber installed. A dryer vent is $298 on its own or $199 added to a duct cleaning.

Is it worth it?

Sometimes, and the camera photos are how you find out. If the duct walls are furred over, cleaning takes that out of the loop your air runs through, and the before and after are obvious. If the metal is clean, it isn’t worth doing and we’ll say so. The EPA’s position is that routine cleaning hasn’t been shown to prevent health problems, so we don’t sell it that way.
