What’s different in Vienna

Vienna dryer vents: short runs in the old houses, long ones in the new.

Inside the Town of Vienna about eight in ten homes are single-family houses, and about two thirds went up before 1980. In a house that age the laundry is often in the basement or the lower level, and the dryer vent goes a short way out the nearest wall. Short is good. The trouble sits behind the dryer instead: an old foil or plastic hose, crushed flat every time somebody pushes the machine back.

The houses built since 2000, about a quarter of the town, turned that around. The laundry room moved upstairs next to the bedrooms, and the dryer vent now crosses a ceiling or climbs to the roof before it reaches the outside. A long run with a couple of turns fills faster than a short one, and on a second floor you can’t easily see from the yard whether the flap is opening.

In Wolf Trap, on the county side, nearly every home is a single-family house, most from the 1970s and 80s, with the laundry on the main floor or off the garage. Those dryer vents usually run straight through an outside wall, sometimes low behind shrubs or under a deck, where leaves and nests collect in front of the hood.

In the Windover Heights Historic District, the cleaning never touches the outside of the house. Moving a dryer vent hood to a different wall does, and an outside change that isn’t an in-kind replacement goes to the district’s Board of Review for a Certificate of Appropriateness. If a hood there needs replacing, we’ll say so before anything changes.

What it costs

What dryer vent cleaning costs in Vienna.

The same prices as everywhere we work: $298 for dryer vent cleaning on its own, $199 when it’s added to an air duct cleaning, and included every year with Comfort+ membership at $199 a year.

  • Dryer vent cleaning, on its own$298
  • Dryer vent cleaning, added to an air duct cleaning$199
  • Comfort+ membership, dryer vent cleaning every year included$199 a year

The price covers the whole dryer vent line, from the back of the dryer to the hood outside, with camera photos of what we find, a dated invoice, and before and after photos of your line when we can get a clear shot. Anything past the cleaning, like a new hose or a guard on the hood, you get the price first.

With Comfort+ membership, $199 a year covers the dryer vent cleaning every year, plus a water heater flush with a sewer camera inspection, a heating maintenance visit and a cooling maintenance visit, and we tell you when each one is due.

When it’s due

When a dryer vent needs cleaning in Vienna.

The hood is two floors up

In a Vienna house built since 2000 the dryer vent hood often sits high on a back wall or on the roof, where nobody looks at it. Watch it from the yard while the dryer runs; if the flap hangs still, lint is choking the line.

The hose behind the dryer is old

Older houses often still have a foil or plastic accordion hose behind the dryer. It crushes, it sags where lint collects, and fire departments tell people to use metal instead.

Towels take two cycles

The first thing most people notice. When the dryer vent is packed, the damp air has nowhere to go, so the clothes stay wet and the dryer runs hot.

Town of Vienna

The town’s own fire station, Station 2 on Center Street, is one of Fairfax County Fire and Rescue’s, and the county’s advice holds inside the town line: clean the lint out of the dryer vent pipe once a year, and sooner when clothes start taking longer to dry. Source.

Choosing who cleans it

How to pick a dryer vent cleaning company in Vienna.

Questions to ask anybody who quotes you, us included.

  1. Will they pull the dryer out and look at the hose?

In the older Vienna houses that hose is where most of the trouble is. A real dryer vent cleaning includes moving the dryer, checking the hose, and pricing a metal one before swapping anything.

  2. Do they clean the whole line, end to end?

Brushing the first few feet from the laundry room isn’t a dryer vent cleaning. Ask whether they clean from the back of the dryer to the hood outside, and how they get the lint out of the house instead of pushing it further down.

  3. Do they show you what’s inside the line?

Camera photos of the inside of your dryer vent line are how you know it needed cleaning, and before and after photos are how you know the job was done. Ask to see them, and for a dated invoice if your HOA wants proof.

What our customers say.

★★★★★
Moises and SwiftPro were excellent. They cleaned my dryer duct and repaired an area that had become disconnected and was therefore posing a fire hazard. Moises was punctual, friendly, and even went the extra mile to help me briefly with another small household project.

Questions

Dryer vent cleaning questions from Vienna.

Do you clean dryer vents in Vienna houses with the laundry upstairs?

Yes, the whole line from the back of the dryer to the hood, wherever it comes out. When you book, tell us whether the hood is on a second floor wall or the roof, so we come with a ladder that reaches it.

My dryer is in the basement of a 1960s house. Does the dryer vent still need cleaning?

Yes, once a year like any other. A short run clogs slower, but the hose behind the dryer and the hood outside still collect lint, and a low hood near a wooded yard is a favorite spot for a nest. The camera photos show you what was in yours.

How much does dryer vent cleaning cost in Vienna?

$298 booked on its own, $199 added to an air duct cleaning, and included every year with Comfort+ membership at $199 a year.
