Three kinds of well water in one ZIP, and not one printed hardness figure.
Every drop around Remington comes out of the ground. Fauquier County’s comprehensive plan says county residents outside the Town of Warrenton rely entirely on groundwater, public systems included. Inside the town limits the Town of Remington pumps from its own wells, and the County’s plan says it also serves developments north and west of the railroad by agreement with the Fauquier County Water and Sanitation Authority (FCWSA). FCWSA runs a separate small system for The Meadows and The Ridge, and past the public lines a house draws from a well of its own.
None of those prints a hardness number. The Town posts no water quality report on its website, and FCWSA’s 2025 report for The Meadows and The Ridge lists two drilled wells in fractured bedrock, 315 and 300 feet deep, with sodium at 22 to 25 mg/L, but leaves hardness out. So the honest answer sits in your tank. Opening the drain valve on a flush brings up whatever has settled since the last one, and you see it come out.
On FCWSA’s system, both wells get a phosphate, 1 to 5 parts per million, to control color and sediment. The same report says the two booster pumps run at different times of day, which can leave pressure low in parts of the neighborhood at certain hours. Every flush comes with a whole-home plumbing check, pressure reading included, so you’ll know where your house sits.
In the older houses downtown, the water heater often lives in a cellar dug long before anyone planned for one, and plenty of those houses are rented: more than four households in ten across 22734 rent, and the typical rental went up in 1957. A tenant seldom knows when the tank was last drained, so a turnover is the moment to clear it and read the date on its label. Past the public lines, we don’t work on wells or pumps; the flush starts at the tank, so mention any filter or softener ahead of the heater when you book.

- Outside the town limits, on the Fauquier County side, about 7 in 10 owner homes heat with electricity. On an electric water heater, sediment settles around the lower heating element, and clearing it is part of the flush.

Why people in Remington book a flush.
It pops or rumbles
That’s water boiling under a layer of sediment on the bottom of the tank. A flush clears it out.
Nobody knows when it was last done
Which is most houses. The drain valve at the bottom of the tank has usually never been opened.
The tankless throws a code
E016 or E030 on a Navien, LC on a Rinnai. Scale in the heat exchanger is the usual reason, and a descale is the fix.
How to pick who flushes your water heater in Remington.
Questions worth asking anybody you call, us included.
Do they ask which water you’re on?
Town water, FCWSA’s Meadows and Ridge system and a private well each behave differently around Remington. Whoever flushes your tank should ask which one feeds the house, and read your pressure before leaving.
Do they check the anode rod and test the relief valve?
The anode is the part that corrodes so the tank doesn’t, and the relief valve is the tank’s safety valve. A flush that skips both is just draining water.
On a tankless, do they pump descaler through it?
A real descale isolates the heater at its service valves and pumps solution through the heat exchanger, then rinses it and cleans the inlet screen.

Water heater flush questions from Remington.
Is FCWSA’s hydrant flushing the same as a water heater flush?
No. FCWSA flushes each of its systems every second or third month, opening hydrants to drive water fast through the mains for about six hours, and it suggests skipping laundry and baths while that runs. That scours the mains under the road. A water heater flush drains what has settled in your own tank, so book yours for after the Authority’s round.
How often should a tankless heater on Remington water be descaled?
The heater’s installation manual sets the interval by hardness, and nobody publishes that number here, so start with a reading of your own cold water from a test kit. Once you have it, the manual gives the schedule. A descale is $300, regularly $350.
How much does a water heater flush cost in Remington?
$99 right now for a tank, normally $199, with a whole-home plumbing check. A tankless descale is $300 right now, regularly $350. Comfort+ membership, $199 a year, includes the flush every year.
