Orlean’s cold comes as long freezing stretches and a few hard nights below 17.
Thirty years of NOAA averages from a co-op station just southeast of Warrenton, 12 miles off, give January a mean low near 25. Close to a hundred nights a year dip to freezing or below, about five reach 10 or below, and roughly 13 days stay at or below 32 from morning to night. The County’s code has installers size heat for a 17 degree outdoor day. The village itself sits near 610 feet, three miles south-southwest of Thumb Run Mountain’s summit.
Most of that cold falls on a heat pump. The Census counts Orlean in Marshall’s ZIP, 20115, and there 64 percent of owners heat electrically; in farm country that usually means a heat pump, backed by resistance strips for the bitter nights. Below 17 the strips are supposed to help. If they’re carrying the house on a 40 degree afternoon, or the outdoor coil is caked white and never clears, something in the defrost or the controls has failed.
About one owner in five there burns propane from a yard tank, and a propane furnace is still electric at heart: no power, no igniter, no inducer fan, no blower. The nor’easter of March 2, 2018 left trees and wires down across northern Fauquier, with roughly 1,100 reports to the County’s 911 center. When the lines come back, a propane furnace that won’t fire has often lost its igniter, $240 to $410 to replace, or its control board to the surge, $550 to $1,180.
During the late January 2026 Arctic outbreak the Weather Service had extreme cold warnings up on the worst nights, and on February 1 the Hume weather station, four miles northwest, read a wind chill of minus 8. That’s the kind of night a squealing blower motor picks to quit for good, $670 to $2,400 to replace.

Orlean
Orlean’s own ZIP, 20128, is post office boxes only, so the Census Bureau maps no area for it. These are ZIP 20115 as a whole, the Marshall ZIP area Orlean sits in, Marshall included.

- Electric heat here usually means a heat pump with electric strips as backup, and a heat pump stuck on those strips shows up on the electric bill.
- A few houses still burn heating oil. We don’t work on oil burners, but a switch to a heat pump or a gas or propane furnace is ours to price.

What a failing furnace in Orlean usually does.
The furnace quit the morning after a snow
Check the side wall before the phone. A high-efficiency propane furnace pulls in air and pushes out exhaust through a pair of white plastic pipes there, and snow drifted over them makes it shut down on purpose. Sweep them clear, cycle the furnace switch and wait a few minutes.
The heat pump blows cool air
A few minutes of cool air in winter is a defrost cycle, and that’s normal. Cool air all the time, or emergency heat running all day, is a call.
It smells the first time it runs
Dust burning off the heat exchanger smells for the first few minutes of the season, then stops. A gas smell is different: leave the house and call your gas company from outside.

How to pick the best furnace repair company in Orlean.
Questions worth asking anybody who comes out, us included.
Do they check the backup heat too?
On a design-day night, the strips or the propane furnace do part of the heating. Have the tech fire the backup and confirm each stage works, so a burned-out strip shows up on a mild day, not at 2 a.m. in January.
Will they price the part before they fix it?
Flame sensors, igniters and control boards all have a going rate. A tech who can’t tell you the number before starting is asking you to find out afterwards.
Do they look at the venting, not just the flame?
Getting the burners lit is half a heating call. Ask whether they check the flue and test for carbon monoxide while the panel’s open.
Do they know when a repair isn’t worth it?
A big repair on a furnace past 15 or 20 years deserves a replacement price next to it. A good tech puts both numbers in front of you and lets you choose.

Heating repair questions from Orlean.
Does wind chill make my heat pump work harder?
Not the way it sounds. Wind chill is about how quickly skin loses heat; the outdoor coil only responds to the true air temperature. Wind does strip heat from a drafty old farmhouse faster, so expect longer run times. A coil that stays iced over is a separate problem, and a call.
The propane tank ran dry. Will the furnace just start back up?
Refill first. Propane suppliers usually want to test the lines for leaks before the gas goes back on. After that the furnace may need its safety lockout reset, and sometimes its flame sensor cleaned, $95 to $180.
How much does furnace repair cost in Orlean?
The diagnostic visit is $99. A flame sensor cleaned is $95 to $180; an igniter or flame sensor replaced, $240 to $410; a control board, $550 to $1,180; a blower motor, $670 to $2,400.
Should I repair it or replace it?
Fix the small parts on almost anything. Before a big repair on an old furnace, look at the replacement number: a furnace alone, keeping the air conditioner you have, runs $4,285 to $14,040 installed, and the HVAC estimator gives your number in about a minute.
