Lake Ridge and Potomac Mills run on heat pumps; Dale City adds one beside the gas.
Electric heat in the Census mostly means heat pumps here, and Woodbridge splits sharply on it. In Potomac Mills, 881 of 1,304 owner homes heat with electricity. In Lake Ridge it’s 6,137 of 12,238, almost exactly half. Dale City, the biggest place with Woodbridge mail, is the gas side, about three owners in ten on electric heat. Renters lean further: two rented homes in three in the Census place called Woodbridge heat with electricity.
In Lake Ridge most electric houses went up in the 1980s, more than four in ten of them townhouses, so the heat pump out back is rarely the first, and the air handler lives in a closet or the attic. A like-for-like swap there comes down to sizing and to the path in: the new air handler has to fit through the same doorway or attic opening the old one used, and the new outdoor unit onto the old pad.
Dale City is where a heat pump usually replaces an air conditioner. Two owners in three there heat with gas, so the unit outside cools through the furnace’s blower. Put a heat pump in its place and the furnace stays for the hardest freezes. That swap falls outside the county’s no-permit line, which covers only the same type of unit in the same spot.
Sizing matters more than for an air conditioner, since a heat pump carries the house in January too. Prince William’s design temperature, the cold a heating system gets sized against, is 16 degrees. A unit picked by copying the old cooling size can run short on a cold night and hand more of it to the backup strips.
How the houses across Woodbridge are heated.
Census figures for the owner-occupied homes in each place, and what that usually means for a heat pump.
| Place | Median home built | Most homes are | Heated with | What a heat pump job usually looks like |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dale City | 1983 | single-family houses, about 7 in 10 | gas, about 7 in 10 | 1980s and 90s gas houses, most on a second air conditioner, the part a heat pump would replace. |
| Lake Ridge | 1985 | townhouses, about 4 in 10 | electricity, about 5 in 10 | Electric heat leads, which here means heat pumps: often a like-for-like swap. |
| Woodbridge | 1976 | single-family houses, about 4 in 10 | gas, about 5 in 10 | Older gas houses, where a heat pump pairs with the furnace once the ducts are checked. |
| Leesylvania | 2006 | single-family houses, about 4 in 10 | gas, about 6 in 10 | Gas houses from the 2000s, where an aging air conditioner can give way to a heat pump. |
| Potomac Mills | 1988 | single-family houses, about 6 in 10 | electricity, about 7 in 10 | Electric heat leads, which here means heat pumps: often a like-for-like swap. |
| County Center | 2006 | townhouses, about 4 in 10 | gas, about 6 in 10 | Gas houses from the 2000s, where an aging air conditioner can give way to a heat pump. |

When a heat pump in Woodbridge is worth replacing.
The backup heat runs more each winter
On a Lake Ridge or Potomac Mills heat pump past its fifteenth year, strips that come on in mild weather, or a house that can’t hold its setting on a freezing morning, mean the outdoor unit is losing ground. A $99 diagnostic visit says whether that’s a fixable fault or the end of the unit.
The AC quit, and you heat with gas
A heat pump can go where the air conditioner sat, heat on mild days and leave the cold nights to the furnace. That’s dual fuel.
It’s past 15 years old
It heats all winter and cools all summer, so it piles up hours an air conditioner never sees. Past 15 years, price the replacement beside any big repair.
The paperwork behind a new heat pump in Woodbridge.
Prince William County
Prince William County lists any work that alters a home’s heating and air conditioning as permit work, but swapping an electric furnace, heat pump or air conditioning condensing unit for the same type of unit in the same spot is an ordinary repair that needs no permit. Source.
How to pick the best heat pump installer in Woodbridge.
Questions to ask anybody who quotes you, us included.
Did they size it for a 16 degree night, not just July?
Ask what outdoor temperature they sized the heating for; here the answer should be 16 degrees. One that only mentions the old unit’s tonnage means nobody did the winter math.
Did they size it, or copy the old label?
Copying the old nameplate repeats whatever guess was made when the house was built. The wrong size runs worse in both seasons.
Is the air handler in the price?
A heat pump system is the outdoor unit plus the air handler inside. Ask whether the quote covers both, matched, in writing.
Who sets up the backup heat?
Set wrong, the electric strips run on mild days. Ask who programs the thermostat and at what outdoor temperature the strips may come on.

Heat pump replacement questions from Woodbridge.
Will Washington Gas pay toward a heat pump in Dale City?
It can, if Washington Gas sends your gas bill and the heat pump takes a central air conditioner’s place beside a gas furnace that meets its efficiency floor. A heat pump replacing a heat pump gets nothing from that rebate, which leaves the all-electric houses of Lake Ridge and Potomac Mills out. Our dual fuel guide has the amounts.
Our Woodbridge rental’s heat pump died between tenants. Repair or replace?
Get both prices before the next lease starts. A $99 diagnostic visit puts the repair on paper, and if the unit is past fifteen years or on R-22, the replacement range goes beside it so the owner decides once. The HVAC estimator narrows that range first.
How much does heat pump replacement cost in Woodbridge?
$8,499 to $21,650 installed for a heat pump system, the outdoor unit and the air handler, 2 to 5 ton. A small single-stage system lands near the bottom, a big variable-speed one near the top. The HVAC estimator narrows it to your house.
Should I get a heat pump, or a furnace and air conditioner?
A heat pump system runs $8,499 to $21,650 installed; a gas furnace and air conditioner together, $8,898 to $23,000. No gas line usually means a heat pump. With gas, you can keep the furnace and add one; our heat pump vs gas furnace guide runs the numbers.
