Better Than Yesterday Motivation, Told Over a Dirty Evaporator Coil

The message is better than yesterday motivation: your only rival is who you were last year. The footage is a dirty evaporator coil, which quietly makes your AC worse every season nobody cleans it.

What you’re seeing in this video

Everything is shot from the tech's point of view. Red work gloves reach into an air handler cabinet, past sheet metal panels, with the evaporator coil right there and visibly dirty.

The evaporator coil is the indoor half of your AC, the finned block that gets cold and pulls heat and humidity out of the air blowing across it. When dust coats those fins, air can't touch the metal, so the coil cools less and the system runs longer.

Over it, a voice says the only competition is the person you were yesterday. Techs get better the same way, one cabinet at a time.

Why it matters in your house

  • A coil caked in dust can freeze on a humid day. If you see ice on the copper line at the indoor unit, shut the AC off and call before the compressor pays for it.
  • Most coil dirt starts with the filter. A basic filter changed on time beats a fancy one left in for a year.
  • Ask whether your maintenance visit includes a look at the indoor coil, not just the outdoor unit. Growth for a tech means opening the cabinets other people skip.

How do I know if my evaporator coil is dirty?

Common signs are weak airflow from the vents, an AC that runs long without getting the house cool, higher summer bills and ice on the refrigerant line. You usually can't see the coil without opening a panel, so a tech checks it by pulling the access cover with a good light.
