Dryer Vent Clogged With Lint, Piled Up and Pulled Out

A dryer vent clogged with lint gives up gray piles under the outside hood, more pulled from the line, and a blue-gray clump in a gloved hand. The words on screen say air ducts; the middle of the clip is dryer vent lint.

What you’re seeing in this video

The text on screen walks through what happens when air ducts go uncleaned, and the clip does open and close on duct work: Aaron, our duct cleaning technician, kneels in a red headlamp at a wall return beside a bookshelf, and later on a patterned rug by a window. What sits between those two shots is a dryer vent job.

Gray lint is heaped on a wooden deck under the small hood where the dryer exhausts outside. Indoors, blue-gray lint lies on the floor next to the white brush rod and black hose used to clear the line, and a gloved hand holds up a fistful of it over a cork floor.

Two shots in the middle are neither: a black pipe lying in attic insulation with a bird's nest of dry grass beside it, and a heap of dark gray lint and debris on a floor next to a white appliance.

Why it matters in your house

  • A gray drift of lint under your outside dryer vent hood is worth a look. It usually means more is stuck in the line between the dryer and the wall.
  • Failure to clean is the leading cause of home dryer fires in NFPA's numbers, and lint like this is the fuel. A line this full is a job for now.
  • On a dryer vent cleaning we photograph the inside of the line and show you, so you see your own lint, not somebody else's.

How do I know if my dryer vent is clogged with lint?

Clothes need a second cycle, the top of the dryer gets hot, or the laundry room feels warm and stuffy. Go outside while it runs. If barely any air comes out of the hood, or lint is caught around the flap, the line is clogged. Most homes need it cleaned about once a year.
