Video · AC Maintenance and Coil Cleaning
Cleaning Inside an AC Unit Means Cleaning the Wires Too
Cleaning inside an AC unit isn't only the coil and the cabinet walls. Dust packs onto the control wiring and connections, where it hides damage, holds moisture and makes small problems harder to spot.

What you’re seeing in this video
Hands in maroon sleeves work inside an indoor HVAC cabinet, a furnace or air handler, wiping rust-red dust off a bundle of control wires with a rag. On camera, the tech says to go wire by wire and be gentle, so nothing gets tugged loose.
The text on screen makes the point plainly: a real cleaning is more than wiping down the outside of the equipment. He works the bundle slowly, one wire at a time, instead of dragging the rag across all of them at once.
You guys want to make sure everything is good individually. Wrap every wire. Be gentle. Get rid of that stuff.
Look at that. And I should have to go through it one by one. Cuz if you don't, it might just grow again and again and again and again.
Why it matters in your house
- Dust on wiring hides what a tech looks for: a melted wire nut, a chewed wire, a loose terminal or a scorched spot on the board. Clean wires make those easy to see.
- Low-voltage control wires are thin and break easily at the terminals. Cleaning should happen with the power off and a gentle hand, not a stiff brush or compressed air blasting the board.
- If dust builds up inside the cabinet fast, look at the filter fit and the return side. Gaps around the filter let unfiltered air carry dust straight into the equipment.
Should HVAC maintenance include cleaning the inside of the unit?
Yes. A real visit opens the indoor cabinet, not just the outdoor unit. The tech should clear dust off the blower area, wiring and control board, check the drain pan, and look at connections while they're clean enough to see. Ask what got cleaned inside, and a good tech will be able to tell you.
