AC Condenser Parts: Compressor, Coil, Capacitor and the Rest
An outdoor AC condenser is a compressor, a coil, a fan and the electrical parts that start them. The compressor squeezes refrigerant, the coil and fan dump your home's heat outside, and the capacitor gets it all moving.

What you’re seeing in this video
The camera goes close inside an outdoor AC condenser: the capacitor, the bundle of wiring that feeds it, the filter drier on the refrigerant line, and the service valve where a tech connects gauges. Each one has a job in moving heat out of your house.
Then two techs, one in a black SwiftPro shirt with sunglasses pushed up on his head, wheel a brand-new condenser on a dolly up a path from a row of townhomes.
Why it matters in your house
- The filter drier is the small metal canister on the liquid line. It catches moisture and debris in the refrigerant, and it's normally replaced any time the system is opened for major work.
- The contactor is the switch the thermostat closes to start the unit. Pitted contacts can chatter or stick closed, so an outdoor unit that won't shut off is worth a look.
- Knowing these names helps when you get a quote. A capacitor is a modest repair, a fan motor is mid-range, and a compressor on an older system often means pricing a new one.
How does an AC condenser work?
Your indoor coil soaks up heat from the house, and the refrigerant carries it outside. The compressor squeezes that refrigerant into a hot, high-pressure gas, the condenser coil spreads it out, and the fan blows air across the coil so the heat leaves into the yard. The refrigerant cools into a liquid and heads back inside to do it again.
