What you’re seeing in this video

A tech in a black SwiftPro polo, olive work pants and a red headlamp on a backward cap kneels at an open gas furnace in a basement.

Someone asks how busy he is. He answers fourteen, then poses for the camera like a man who should not be disturbed.

Beside the furnace sits a condensate pump. High-efficiency furnaces pull so much heat out of the exhaust that water condenses inside them, and when there's no floor drain nearby, that pump lifts the water up and away through a small tube.

Why it matters in your house

  • A puddle beside your furnace, a pump that runs constantly or one that buzzes without moving water means it's failing. They're simple to replace before they soak a finished floor.
  • Many pumps carry a safety switch that shuts the furnace or AC off when the reservoir overflows. No heat plus a full pump is a common pairing.
  • Pour a little water into the pump's reservoir once a season to make sure it kicks on, and keep the discharge tube from kinking.

What does a condensate pump do on a furnace?

A high-efficiency furnace makes water as it burns, and the AC coil above it makes more in summer. If there's no floor drain low enough, a condensate pump collects that water in a small tank and pumps it through tubing to a drain or outside. When it fails, the water ends up on the floor.
