HVAC Service Call Kids Run the Show While the Lines Go In

These HVAC service call kids handled the entertainment while the tech kept drilling. Underneath the joke is real work: routing refrigerant line and wiring through the joists of an unfinished basement ceiling.

What you’re seeing in this video

The kids are off camera, but you can hear them narrating. On screen, a tech stands on a fiberglass ladder with a cordless drill, working up between the floor joists of an unfinished basement. The ceiling bays are lined with foil-faced insulation.

He's feeding refrigerant line, the copper pair that carries coolant between the indoor coil and the outdoor unit, along with control wire, through holes bored in the joists. Running them through the framing keeps the lines protected and up out of the way where nobody can snag them later.

What they say on camera

POV, you came to fix the AC, but the kids provided the entertainment.

Why it matters in your house

  • Holes through floor joists belong near the middle of the board, away from the top and bottom edges, so the joist keeps its strength. A careful tech drills them that way.
  • Kids are welcome to watch, from a few steps back. Ladders, drills and open tool bags are the real hazard during an install, so a clear zone around the work helps everyone.
  • If you plan to finish that basement someday, tell the tech now. Lines can be routed so a future drywall ceiling doesn't bury a joint you might need to reach.

Is it OK for my kids to watch the HVAC tech work?

Sure, most techs enjoy a curious audience. Just keep them out of reach of the ladder and tools, and away from anything with a cover off, like an open furnace or electrical panel. A good tech will tell you when it's a safe moment to come closer and see what's going on.
