AC Making Loud Noise? The Joke, Then the Replacement
A loud AC is telling you something: buzzing usually means electrical parts, grinding or squealing points at the fan motor, and banging can mean the compressor. When it's all three on an old unit, replacement is the honest answer.

What you’re seeing in this video
The joke is simple: someone thinks their speaker's blown, and it turns out to be the AC outside. Then the clip gets to the real work.
A SwiftPro tech in a black hoodie connects hoses from an outdoor AC condenser to a refrigerant recovery tank. Before an old unit comes out, its refrigerant gets pumped into that tank instead of vented into the air, which the law requires. In the driveway, techs wheel a boxed new AC unit on a hand truck off a SwiftPro pickup with the Trane logo on it.
Why it matters in your house
- A buzz from the outdoor unit with no fan spinning is often a capacitor or contactor. Shut it off at the thermostat, because a compressor straining against a dead part overheats fast.
- Rattling usually means loose panels or debris in the fan. Squealing or grinding means a fan motor bearing on its way out. Both are repairs if caught early.
- Loud banging or clanking at startup on an older system can be the compressor itself. That's the noise to take seriously, since it often decides repair versus replace.
Why is my AC unit so loud all of a sudden?
A sudden change in sound means something changed inside. Check for sticks or leaves in the fan first, with the power off. If it's a buzz, hum, screech or bang, turn the system off and call it in, because running it can turn a small electrical fix into a compressor failure.
