What’s different in Bristow

Gas heats most of 20136, so Bristow heat pump work splits into two very different jobs.

Out of 8,727 owner homes in the 20136 ZIP, 1,108 heat with electricity by the Census count, roughly one in eight; within Linton Hall the ratio is nearer one in nine. In Bristow’s 2000s and 2010s houses, electric heat usually means a heat pump outside and an air handler with resistance strips inside. For those owners the job is a like-for-like trade: outdoor unit and air handler out, matched pair in.

The other job belongs to the gas houses, more than eight in ten, where a heat pump takes over the air conditioner’s pad and the furnace stays. That’s where the gas bill counts. Washington Gas pays its Virginia customers toward a dual fuel heat pump only when it replaces an existing central air conditioner; a heat pump replacing a heat pump gets nothing from that program. Washington Gas also says some areas of Prince William County are on Columbia Gas, whose rebate list, read in October 2026, named furnaces and water heaters but no heat pump. Our dual fuel guide keeps the current amounts.

Prince William County keeps the all-electric trade simple: a heat pump replaced by the same type in the same location is on its no-permit list. Turn an air conditioner into a heat pump and it’s no longer the same type; move the outdoor unit and it’s no longer the same location.

The ZIP’s build dates split its heat pumps by refrigerant too. Originals from the 5,558 homes finished between 2000 and 2009 most likely hold R-22, out of production since 2020. The 1,690 homes finished from 2010 on came with R-410A or a newer refrigerant, all still serviced, so on those a leak gets a repair price before anyone talks replacement.

By the numbers

Bristow houses, by the numbers

From the Census Bureau’s 2020 to 2024 survey, owner-occupied homes unless it says otherwise. A heat pump counts as electric heat.

Bristow

  • Median home built2004 Census
  • Built before 1980hardly any Census
  • Built since 2000about 8 in 10 Census
  • Most homes aresingle-family houses, about 6 in 10 Census
  • Heated withgas, about 9 in 10 Census
  • Rentedabout 1 in 10 Census
  • Most houses here burn gas, so a heat pump usually means dual fuel: it replaces the air conditioner and the furnace stays as backup.
  • In a townhouse the outdoor unit sits on a small pad out back, the indoor half in a closet or attic.
What it costs

What heat pump replacement costs in Bristow.

The same price book as our heating page and the HVAC estimator, for a heat pump and air handler, 2 to 5 ton.

  • A heat pump system, outdoor unit and air handler, installed$8,499 to $21,650
  • A gas furnace and air conditioner together, installed$8,898 to $23,000
  • Diagnostic visit, when a repair may do$99

Might it be a repair? The diagnostic visit is $99, and the tech prices the repair and the replacement side by side. Financing is available, subject to approval.

With Comfort+ membership at $199 a year, the diagnostic visit is included, and half of each repair bill is banked toward replacing that system, up to $1,500.

When it’s time

When a heat pump in Bristow is worth replacing.

AUX on the thermostat for hours on a mild day

In one of Bristow’s all-electric houses, that means the backup strips are carrying heat the outdoor unit should be making. A coil iced over that never clears, a tired compressor or a failed defrost control are the usual suspects, and the $99 diagnostic visit finds which.

The AC quit, and you heat with gas

A heat pump can go where the air conditioner sat, heat on mild days and leave the cold nights to the furnace. That’s dual fuel.

It’s the one the builder put in

A heat pump from a 2000s house that’s still original has run every summer and winter since. Once repairs start, price the replacement before the next one.

Permits, locally

The paperwork behind a new heat pump in Bristow.

Prince William County

Prince William County lists any work that alters a home’s heating and air conditioning as permit work, but swapping an electric furnace, heat pump or air conditioning condensing unit for the same type of unit in the same spot is an ordinary repair that needs no permit. Source.

Choosing who installs it

How to pick the best heat pump installer in Bristow.

Questions to ask anybody who quotes you, us included.

  1. Did they ask whether the old unit outside is an AC or a heat pump?

In Bristow the answer decides whether Washington Gas’s dual fuel payment can apply and whether the job fits Prince William’s no-permit list. A quote that skips the question skips both.

  2. Did they size it, or copy the old label?

Copying the old nameplate repeats whatever guess was made when the house was built. The wrong size runs worse in both seasons.

  3. Is the air handler in the price?

A heat pump system is the outdoor unit plus the air handler inside. Ask whether the quote covers both, matched, in writing.

  4. Who sets up the backup heat?

Set wrong, the electric strips run on mild days. Ask who programs the thermostat and at what outdoor temperature the strips may come on.

★★★★★
I would highly recommend SwiftPro for an HVAC replacement. The sales process was straightforward and fair and the installation was done to my satisfaction in a timely and complete manner (and I’m pretty demanding). Great job!

Questions

Heat pump replacement questions from Bristow.

Will Prince William County want a permit for a Bristow heat pump?

Not for a heat pump swapped for the same type on the same spot; the county lists that as needing no permit. An air conditioner converted to a heat pump, or a unit relocated to a new pad, falls outside that line, and a Victory Lakes move also goes to the Covenants Committee.

My Bristow house was built in 2012. Is its heat pump due?

Probably not on age alone. A house from 2010 on most likely came with R-410A equipment, so a leak or a dead part is a repair question first. The diagnostic visit is $99, and the tech sets the repair price beside the replacement range.

How much does heat pump replacement cost in Bristow?

$8,499 to $21,650 installed for a heat pump system, the outdoor unit and the air handler, 2 to 5 ton. A small single-stage system lands near the bottom, a big variable-speed one near the top. The HVAC estimator narrows it to your house.

Should I get a heat pump, or a furnace and air conditioner?

A heat pump system runs $8,499 to $21,650 installed; a gas furnace and air conditioner together, $8,898 to $23,000. No gas line usually means a heat pump. With gas, you can keep the furnace and add one; our heat pump vs gas furnace guide runs the numbers.

See the range first, then your number.
