Forgot a Tool in the Attic After the Install Was Done

Forgetting a tool in the attic is every installer's nightmare, because going back means another climb into the heat. The shot shows a finished attic air handler, with a cartoon goose standing in for the panic.

What you’re seeing in this video

No one's working on camera. It's a still look at a finished attic install: an air handler, the indoor half of the system, sitting in the attic with its supply plenum attached and flexible duct running off into blown-in insulation.

An animated goose pops up over the shot to deliver the joke about leaving one piece of equipment behind. Anyone who has climbed back down an attic ladder and patted an empty pocket knows the feeling.

Why it matters in your house

  • Before an installer leaves your attic, everything should be accounted for: tools, packaging, scraps of duct and the access panel screwed back on the air handler.
  • Flexible duct should run in smooth curves, not kinked or crushed under insulation. A pinched run starves the room at the other end of it.
  • Blown insulation gets pushed around during attic work. Ask that it be raked back over bare spots so your ceiling doesn't lose its heat barrier.

What should I check after an HVAC install in my attic?

Ask for photos if you'd rather not climb up. You want to see the air handler level, the drain pan and drain line in place, flex duct without kinks, the plenum sealed, and insulation put back where it was disturbed. Nothing loose should be left lying around, tools included.
