What you’re seeing in this video

On the count of three, three techs lift a new AC condenser and start feeding it through a narrow wooden gate on the side of a house. There's barely room for the unit and the people carrying it.

You can hear them calling it out, easy, easy, then a chorus of stop as the box meets the gate frame. One tech is grinning through the strain. The condenser is the outdoor unit of central air, and it has to stay upright the whole way.

Why it matters in your house

  • Measure your side gate before replacement day. Newer high efficiency condensers are often taller or wider than the unit they replace, and a gate that fit the old one may not fit the new one.
  • Condensers should travel upright. Tipping one on its side can move oil out of the compressor, and the thin aluminum coil fins bend if they scrape a post.
  • Clear the path ahead of time: move grills, planters and hoses out of the side yard so the techs can see their footing.

How do you move an AC unit through a narrow space?

Keep it upright, take the gate off its hinges if you can, and use as many people as the unit needs, with one person calling the moves. Pros protect the coil fins with the box or a blanket until it's on the pad. If the opening is just too small, a fence panel sometimes comes down for the day.
