What you’re seeing in this video
Tyler Griffin, SwiftPro's owner, walks a sign up to the front door of a brick-front house. The winning homeowners, a couple, open the door smiling as he tells them they won and that the crew will get them on the schedule.
They explain that their home inspection flagged the AC as really old when they bought the house eight years earlier, and it kept running anyway. Tyler puts it at about 30 years old, well past what most units last. The prize is a 15 SEER Trane outdoor unit with the WeatherGuard top. Before leaving, he makes sure the old unit's nameplate gets on camera.
Yeah, so Yeah, that Look at that bad boy. You got to get that thing on camera. Okay, so we just finished the TD giveaway, and that was a raffle prize. We are now doing the oldest AC giveaway.
So, they get their outdoor unit completely free, 15 seer Trane with the Weatherguard shield on top. Going to be fun. We're going to walk up and congratulate them and uh give this away. Hey, [homeowner].
Hey, how are you? Good. Hey, how's it going? So, you guys are the winners of the Trane 15 seer AC unit.
That's incredible. All right, so we wanted to stop by and let you guys know that we're going to be getting you on the schedule here, okay? Awesome. So, super super exciting.
That's incredible. Do you mind introducing yourselves here? I'm [homeowner] and I'm [homeowner]. [homeowner].
And you guys have been in the area for a while, right? Yeah, like 11 years here. Came from Cincinnati originally, but uh we moved in this house 8 years ago. And they said at that time in the home inspection, yeah, this system's really old.
Yeah. So, now 8 years later we're like, well. Yeah, well, 30 years old is old, so for sure they most units don't get don't keep going that long, so so yours yours you know, limped along, you know, just just long enough, so limped long enough, yes. Yeah, that Look at that bad boy.
You got to get that thing on camera. Air temp. This was the This was the winner. Got to get the get the name plate down there.
[name], right? Like there's some new enhancements, but in terms of durability, nothing they make today lasts as long as it used to. All right, we'll be in touch. You get everything coordinated.
Thank you, [homeowner]. Yep. Thank you. Thank you so much.
Appreciate it. Yep.
Why it matters in your house
- Most central AC systems last 12 to 15 years in Northern Virginia's humid summers. One that's limped past 25 is running on luck and costing more to run every month.
- If a home inspection called your AC old when you bought the house, start planning now. Replacing on your schedule beats an emergency replacement in a July heat wave.
- The nameplate on the outdoor unit shows the model and serial number, which tell a tech its age and refrigerant type. Snap a photo of yours before you call.
How long should a central air conditioner last?
About 12 to 15 years is typical here, a little longer with yearly maintenance and a clean outdoor coil. Past that, efficiency drops and parts get harder to find. Units like the one in this clip that reach 30 are rare, and when they finally quit, it's usually under the heaviest load on a hot day.
