Signs of a Bad Air Handler, Shown From an Attic Blower Pull
Weak airflow, new noises, water around the unit and ice on the lines are the four signs of a bad air handler. Catch them early and it's often a repair instead of a replacement.

What you’re seeing in this video
A SwiftPro tech crawls across attic joists to reach the air handler, the indoor half of a heat pump or AC system that holds the blower and the cooling coil. He slides the blower assembly out of the cabinet: the fan and motor that push air through every duct in the house.
Later shots show a new air handler set in place with its copper refrigerant lines connected and a condensate pump mounted beside it. Up in an attic there's no floor drain, so that small pump lifts the water the coil makes and sends it out of the house.
Why it matters in your house
- Weak airflow at the registers usually points at the blower, a clogged filter or an iced coil. Feel the supply vents in two rooms; if both are weak, the problem starts at the air handler.
- Water in an attic travels before it shows. A stain on the ceiling under the air handler often means the drain pan, drain line or condensate pump has been failing for a while.
- Ice on the copper lines or the coil means the system is starving for airflow or low on refrigerant. Shut the cooling off, let it thaw, and have a tech find out which one.
What does a bad air handler sound like?
Squealing usually means a blower motor bearing wearing out, rattling is often a loose panel or an unbalanced blower wheel, and a hum with no air moving points at a motor or capacitor that can't start. Any new noise from the attic or closet is worth a look before the motor quits on a hot day.
