What Does an AC Capacitor Do? A Look Inside the Panel
An AC capacitor stores an electrical charge and gives the compressor and outdoor fan motor the kick they need to start and keep running. When it weakens, the AC hums, struggles or blows warm air.

What you’re seeing in this video
A young SwiftPro tech pulls the service panel off an outdoor AC condenser beside a house, exposing the electrical compartment. The close-up lands on the run capacitor, a metal can with terminals on top, wired right next to the contactor.
On a dual capacitor, one side serves the compressor and the other serves the fan motor, which is why one weak part can stop both. The text on screen walks through what the capacitor does, and the post adds the warning that matters most: it can hold a dangerous charge even with the power off.
Why it matters in your house
- A failing capacitor often shows itself as a humming outdoor unit with a fan that won't spin, or an AC that clicks on and quits. Heat waves finish off weak ones.
- Look through the grille, never inside the panel: a capacitor with a domed or swollen top, or oily residue, is done. Leave testing to a tech, because the stored charge can hurt you with the breaker off.
- Replacing a weak capacitor early protects the compressor, the most expensive part outdoors, from straining through hard starts all summer.
What are the symptoms of a bad AC capacitor?
The outdoor unit hums but the fan doesn't turn, the AC takes a few tries to start, the system shuts off on its own, or the air inside goes warm while the indoor blower keeps running. A tech confirms it with a meter that reads the capacitor against its rating, which takes a few minutes and settles the question.
