How to Clean Ceiling Air Vents, Starting With How One Goes In
To clean ceiling air vents, get the grille down first. Most are held by a couple of screws or spring clips, the same way the long ceiling supply grille in this clip goes up. Wash it, vacuum the opening, put it back.

What you’re seeing in this video
The joke is a caveman bit: we're not cavemen, Bob, we have technology. The technology is a new system going in.
Outside, a SwiftPro tech with a dark beard and camo hoodie crouches at the sided wall of a house and drills beside a bundle of insulated refrigerant lines. A bundled line set heading through the wall like that usually means a mini-split or a similar system.
Inside, a second tech on a ladder fits a long ceiling-mounted supply grille into its opening. A long, narrow grille spreads air along a room instead of blasting it from one spot. The clip closes on the SwiftPro van driving up the street.
Why it matters in your house
- Ceiling grilles come down easier than you'd think. Look for screws at the ends or on the face. If there are none, it's likely spring clips, so pull straight down gently.
- Put a towel down and wear glasses. Dust on the top side of a ceiling grille falls straight down when it moves.
- Washing the grille fixes what you can see. If the opening behind it is gray too, the duct run needs air duct cleaning, not a wipe.
How do you clean a ceiling air vent without taking it down?
Vacuum the face with a brush attachment and wipe the louvers with a damp microfiber cloth, with the fan off so dust isn't blowing at you. That handles surface dust. If the louvers are caked or there are dark streaks on the ceiling around it, take it down and wash it, and look up into the duct while it's off.
